Re: hmmm no headlights on a 31

Try connecting a ground wire to the headlight and see if that fixes the problem

Re: Turn signal problems

No, I don't have LED brake lights. Would a combination of LED brake lights and regular cowl bulbs create enough resistance to allow the 535 flasher to work? If it would work, it would be a simple...

Re: Turn signal problems

Thanks Badpuppy for your suggestions. I hadn't thought about the power source and that is where I will start the corrective measures.

Re: Turn signal problems

This is not a new problem, there were a lot more important things to address when I got the car, but it is now time to address this issue. I have tried a couple of different flashers (535) with no...

Turn signal problems

Signalstat 900, cowl lights, stop lights turn signals. This is the set up. The turn signals work great if the brakes are not applied. The flasher hesitates and comes back to operation slowly when...

You are a lucky guy!! A "mail slot" in the hood is not an easy thing to repair.

Re: Worn Valve Guide

Watching the valve movement in the chamber jut proved that the valves weren't sticking. The adjustment was done the usual way (rule of 9, .013 and .015) and that is when I discovered the out of...

Re: Worn Valve Guide

I did adjust all valves and they all seemed to move correctly (from what I could see in the valve chamber). The surprise was that this did not fix the compression problem on cylinder #3.

That is...

Re: Worn Valve Guide

The valve was left open because the lock nut on the tappet was not secured. The tappet screw had unscrewed (or never been correctly adjusted) not allowing the valve to seat even when the tappet was...

Re: Worn Valve Guide

Yes, the valve left open is the same with the bad guide.

I checked the valve stem by putting it through the other valve guides to see how it moved. Since the guides are good and the movement is...

Re: Worn Valve Guide

Here is a picture of the valve. Out of curiosity I measured the stem of the eight valves and the variance was .002. The valve in the bad guide was no different than the other ones. The valve seat...

Worn Valve Guide

My 31 Tudor had a 20 psi lower compression on in cylinder #3 combined with a ticking noise in that area. I started the work by removing the valve cover to check the valves, and as it turns out...

Re: A Model A Thinking out Loud.

Thank you Jack for taking the time to write down the story from your Model A. There is no doubt that they do talk to us, all we have to do is to listen. What a great read!

Re: Low compression on cylinder 2 & 3

If you try the compressed air approach, don't forget to check if air is escaping through the crankcase vent pipe (oil pipe). It could be a bad ring causing the low compression.

Re: Model A cross-country migration

Matt,

The idea of driving the Model A across the country is great, but your timing is way off. You will most likely hit snow and ice crossing the Rockies. We just got back from Seattle to...

Re: Model A car names

Edsel Ford had a lot to do with the design of the A so my 31 Tudor got his wife's name: Eleanor.

Re: Engine issue?

This issue has an unexpected solution. After the first post, I borrowed a borescope to try to figure out what was going on. Well, the valve didn't close (which I already knew), but it didn't seem...

Engine issue?

Looking for opinions and advice for a possible engine issue.
