Re: Removing caps on '37 hubcaps?

Thanks for that suggestion. Heating and cooling parts to mate them is a long practiced good idea, so long as I don't over cook it. That would ruin the flavor. :)

Re: Removing caps on '37 hubcaps?

Thanks for the suggestion of compressed air. I would not have thought of that one. I think I'm more nervous now about getting them back on without damaging them. Making a mold would be a lot of work,...

Removing caps on '37 hubcaps?

I'm looking for pointers on how to remove the stainless caps on '37 hubcaps so that they can be restored, and the bases painted. I don't want to damage them, and they look to be easily damaged if not...

Re: VANPELT transmission school photos

He said he'd have to wait and see if he'll feel like putting on another one. If he does, I would highly suggest making the effort.

Another praise from me for the class. Mac, Will and George...

Re: VANPELT Transmission School - 2 weeks - One opening....

Haven't been on here for a while due to a very busy summer.
I've made my reservations and am REALLY looking forward to this. I guess you're really a car nut when you're going to go to class....and...

Re: Lebaron Bonney 36 Phaeton interior

If you look at the picture of the seat base with the springs, you can see lots of puncture marks on the leather on the left side. Looks similar to cat claw marks to me. Also, you can see the same in...

Re: what was your first car and how much did you pay

Not many that still own their first car, like we do. Understandable though, I was just lucky enough to get my dream car the first time around. It was in pieces when I bought it at 15 and took me till...

Re: Repro BUMPERS--- latest GONE

They've just moved on to newer cars. Parts for (ugh) certain '80s cars are increasing. There is still lots available for the '60s cars and trucks, and '70s trucks. It goes with generations being...

Re: what was your first car and how much did you pay

1st car I purchased...1969 Mustang Mach 1 for $250 (I was 15), which I still have, fully restored.
2nd was a 1958 2dr Ranch Wagon (again, for $250)...which I just sold today.

Re: How many of you are doing total restorations?

Very true. The only things I can't do are the woodgraining and the interior stitching. That alone is going to cost me $6-$7k, probably at a minimum. That's going to be a hard one to swallow,...

Re: Higher candlepower bulbs an issue with stock wiring?

Thanks for the input. I'm assuming the halogens put out more light than the higher candela incandescents, but I'll look into it more. Either would be a good upgrade, I would think.

Re: Using NOS fiber timing gears, yes or no?

This is why they made +.001 and +.002 cam gears. It makes a big difference in this area.

Aussie Merc, just curious, why would a cam gear failure be catastrophic in a flathead? The only issue I...

Re: Higher candlepower bulbs an issue with stock wiring?

Thanks for all the great info, including that old post, Terry.
And Bob, if that info is accurate, it's very helpful. Thank you.
I'm going to have to look at the early charging systems more. I'm not...

Re: Higher candlepower bulbs an issue with stock wiring?

They are incandescent, styled just like the originals. That's why I wondered. Apparently, it gets real complicated trying to convert candlepower to watts, and the only rating on the bulbs, at least...

Higher candlepower bulbs an issue with stock wiring?

I've tried to find a formula for converting candlepower to watts so that I could figure out how much extra strain on the stock type wiring it would be to use the newer, higher candlepower bulbs, but...

Re: 1948 Dash Clock

Same up to at least '55. My '55 originally had a wind-up, but I have an electric for it. Same for all years prior, as far as I know. I had the same thoughts about it being strange if they didn't have...

Re: 40 Coupe Wind Noise

A trick I use, learned from an old friend, is to place a dollar bill anywhere and everywhere around the window and door seals. When everything is shut, you should not be able to pull the dollar out....

Exactly. Only so much you can do without destroying the integrity of what these cars are.

Re: 40 Coupe Wind Noise

This can definitely help the situation if there's an actual air leak. It doesn't take much of a leak to make a big sound, especially when the interior of the car is an almost perfect acoustic...

Re: 1950 Coupe headlight wire routing

Exactly why I'll make my own out of sheets of cork/rubber if I cannot find a suitable replacement. The expanded plastic junk is just that....junk.

Re: Using NOS fiber timing gears, yes or no?

That's good to know they shouldn't present any problems. I know of a few all original flatheads still running without issues, but I didn't know if the engine oil had a part in their preservation....

Re: 1950 Coupe headlight wire routing

Hopefully these will help. Taken from my Dads' all original '50 Custom.
I have some NOS wire blocks. If you need one, you can have one, I'd just need a day or so to find them.

Using NOS fiber timing gears, yes or no?

When I used to help my Dad rebuild flatheads, he always used the factory fiber timing gears. Sometimes he'd use the .001 or .002 over gears if the engine was worn. In the flathead for my '49 Mercury...

Re: Holley 390 Secondary Throttle Setting Question.

I would not attempt to use the secondaries as an adjustment on idle. Like Terry said, just set them to 'barely not touching the bores', then use the primary adjustments as they were designed. The...
