Re: The All 32 Run

Virginia and the surrounding areas are blessed with highways and byways that date to the pre-WWII era. Our emphasis is to keep our vintage autos driving on period-correct roads for as long as we can....

Re: Technical: Electrical- testing for solenoid or starter switch problem

Installed the new battery, cleaned all the connections and grounds, and the truck fired right up!

Re: Technical: Electrical- testing for solenoid or starter switch problem

Yup. 8 years old. The parts guy told me the only reason it lasted that long was because it always had a trickle charge on it.

Re: Technical: Electrical- testing for solenoid or starter switch problem

Parts store tested the battery- fully charged but only 8 cca out of 665. Shot, completely shot. Did not realize a battery can take a full charge but have no capacity to carry a load. Learn something...

Re: Technical: Electrical- testing for solenoid or starter switch problem

I have had these solenoids freeze up on me. Used the same on my 1990 F150, and twice the solenoid froze closed. The clicking you should hear is the solenoid opening and closing. But twice line froze...

Re: Technical: Electrical- testing for solenoid or starter switch problem

I am wondering if I didn't inadvertently hook up the replacement solenoid wrong.... if the solenoid is buzzing then I assume juice is going to it. It should not unless I have the starter button...

Technical: Electrical- testing for solenoid or starter switch problem

1934 Ford Pickup converted to 12 volt and GM style 3-wire alternator so that I can run gauges and an idiot lights. Same starter solenoid as on my '61 that Ford used from the mid '50s-88.

Went to...

Re: Need help planning a site-seeing trip to Detroit

Trip was fabulous. Thanks for your help in making it possible. My traveling partner and navigator was Fordbarn regular TomT/Williamsburg. All the details have been posted over on the HAMB. Here is...

Need help planning a site-seeing trip to Detroit

Before the summer is over, I have the opportunity to visit Detroit. Can any of you make some suggestions about what to visit and where to go to see first hand the early roots of the automobile...

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

Right now, still a ground floor window at that, not the roof! :D

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

A review of this thread on the HAMB is interesting. And it confirms what I learned at Jalopyrama this past weekend. Several builders I respect told me they have rebuilt the '32-34 boxes, and still...

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

Got it. Very helpful. Thank you.

I am learning a ton about my old truck here. When problems come along, you can shake your head and curse them as so many owners seem to do. But when it comes to...

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

I am confused by the procedure description in the shop manual. To add the shims, must I remove the steering column and box from the truck? Or do I just remove the cover, after unbolting the steering...

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

This sounds exactly like what my truck is doing. Normal driving on a straight road requires constant slight adjustments once the motor is warmed up.

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

Hmmmm...I will have to think about that. I was considering pulling out the pinch bolt, and giving the kingpin a whack to see if disturbing it would allow some grease into the zerk. Never thought...

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

Oh yeaaaaaaaaah. I decided to back off a little on the muscle yesterday so that this wouldn't happen. I did manage to get a little penetrating oil through the zerk. But I am convinced now the...

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

Yes, I have done that same thing. It worked on the other two clogged fittings, but this one has really been stubborn. Tried both the torch and a heat gun, but no luck.

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

I bought one of these tools today that claims it can clear and rejuvenate clogged grease fittings and lubrication points. Tomorrow I am going to give it a try.

My idea is to jack up the front...

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

Yes. First priority is to determine why the lube fitting is not taking grease. Once the suspension is properly lubed, then move onto a diagnosis. That is, it a steering box/column problem or...

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

Bob, yes, I can get grease through the fitting. I even swapped the top and bottom fittings just to be sure. Any other ways to get the dried grease out of the joint? Again, it is only the upper...

Re: 1934 Pickup Frustration- Ready to jump out a one story building

Thank you for this idea. How about this plan? Go run the truck until the steering tightens up. Come back to my garage and disconnect the pitman arm. Then I can begin to isolate the problem: whether...
