Re: Kansas plate toppers

Since I was a wee lad here in KS (I"m 63 ) the 8M has always meant 8000 lbs. Larger trucks are rated higher with a more expensive tag.

Re: 49-53 distributor

I'd suggest buying a converted Chevy points distributor from charlie ny here on the forum or from Mike at Third Gen also here. The Chev unit works very well indeed.

Re: 1946 59a Mercury standard bore 3 3/16 pistons

No,your measuring is correct...3 3/16" is 3.1875". That's the standard sized bore for your Merc. .060" over would be 3.2475"

Re: 1946 59a Mercury standard bore 3 3/16 pistons

It's quite odd to see this much increase in ring side clearance due to ring wear without a lot more end gap than .035". Also strange to hear the ring grooves measure in spec. It'll be interesting to...

Re: 1946 59a Mercury standard bore 3 3/16 pistons

Phil- What was the end gap on the compression rings?

Re: 1946 59a Mercury standard bore 3 3/16 pistons

Ford spec is .003"-.004" for ring side clearance in grooves. Check closely to make sure they aren't tapered wider at the outside.

Any obvious cause why the recent rebuild had this problem?...

No. A graphite gasket ("Best" brand gaskets are a very good choice) needs no sealer.Resurfacing the heads is a VERY good idea.

Re: I Don't Like Palnuts

See, Frank...I'm not a Chevy guy either! LOL :D Thanks, Gary, for the education. I didn't realize they did that-never ran into it in many years of running my own shop in the '70s through the '90's. ...

Re: I Don't Like Palnuts

The small journal Chevys...265,283,early 327...used the 11/32" bolts and nuts. When Chevy went to the larger journal cranks (starting with the later 327 and continuing through the 400) all the...

Re: sealng trunk floor

I've had good results using coarse sandpaper and a wire brush to remove loose rust and dirt. Then I brush on a coat of POR-15, while wet lay on a layer of fiberglass cloth, followed by another...

Re: Flatty Friday: Mart keeps plugging away on that old motor.

Well done once again,Mart. Looking forward to future installments! That little boo-boo looks to be small enough the fire ring will be able to seal just fine. Sure is irritating though, isn't it?

Re: 8BA Piston Removal...Success!!!

When I take the valves out of a old flathead, I pry each valve open and stick a 5/16" nut between the valve and seat to hold it open. When they're all open I pull the cam out with the engine upside...

Re: pro or con HEI

Me too. The large cap HEI just looks too out of place for my tastes. The modified standard Chevy or Cadillac points units fit nicely and look the part.

Re: 8BA Piston Removal...Success!!!

I just finished a 260" Merc (4" stroke/.030" over bores) for my '41 Merc. The block had been bored in the past and was worn .003"-.004" at the tops of the cylinders but pistons were fine. I reamed...

Re: 8BA Piston Removal...Success!!!

I have always considered taper of .007" to be the upper limit of a re-ring job. I've done MANY engines for customers who didn't need or want a complete rebuild and never had any trouble. I've also...

Re: It's Friday. Time for a Flathead video. Crusty Flatty Pt.15.

I'd guess after the filming and editing the actual work on the flathead seems the easy part! Well done,Mart. :)

Re: flathead oil pressure?

80psi on the starter w/plugs out and cold oil isn't necessarily bad. Warmed up fully you may see 50+ at speed and anywhere from 15-40 at idle depending on the bearing clearances, idle speed and oil...

Re: 48-50 F1 wiring question

Makes sense...the regulator thinks the generator has started charging so it energizes the field to control it. Well done!

Re: 48-50 F1 wiring question

If the field wire has battery voltage all the time, the regulator is either faulty (regulator points staying closed with engine stopped) or the wire hooked to the field is coming from somewhere other...

Mart,at least some aftermarket valves are dished both intake and exhaust. They are made of suitable material for exhaust use and sold to use in either position. Mine came from SBI just a few months...
