The linkage(s) at the intake manifold are 1957. You say the car came with a 256 and the trans came with the car? Before you start anything, you are going to have to ID the trans and go from there.

I remember your saying it had a 239/256 (?) in it when bought. And you found a 292 to replace it. Is the TRANS the one that came with the car?

Need the TRANS ID when you can.

The FORD-O-MATIC is a 3S SINGLE RANGE TRANS with a 2nd gear start, If you want a 1st gear start, you have to put the selector in L or floor the throttle at take-off.

Small Case is a FORD-O-MATIC....

Parts dude (FORD), mechanic and big time truck driver. Caught DIESEL FEVER and sold 67 GT500 to buy first road tractor. Returned to working on cars....

That should read 1959. The J-BIRD was not released until the 1959 model year although FORD had a few 58's assembled for test purposes.

1961 was the first year of a re-designed 430 so as it would...

HD and PI had longer anchor bolts. I assume it was for thicker gauge return spring(s) used.

I had a 351CJ in a 73 RANCHERO and that thing would scream. And that was with the 4300 carb.

FORD did have some design issues, one...

I came across a description on a 56 where the guy did not use the anchor pin shoe plate only the eyelet of the cable to hold the retracting springs down....

New revelation -

FORD began using self-adj on high-end cars (FORD-BIRD-MERC-LINC) in 1958. Of course they used upgraded foundation brakes.

Have you checked your TV adjustment and have you tightened the bands? Was it a take-out or rebuild?
