Re: Parts suppliers during the virus

I am backlogged on steering box rebuilds at an all time high. To make things worse, the common Timken steering box bearings (5BC) are back ordered right now with no ETA. Might have to go to another...

Re: 1932 "survivoration"

I put this 32 sedan back on the road wearing the remnants of original paint. The car was mostly complete, but I still had to find some matching original pieces and fake in a few small parts to match....

Re: Split rim, wide 5?

I have one of the split rim wide 5 wheels as well. They are not 39-41 3/4-ton, as those are 16x5 and 16x5.5 standard drop center rims. Those wheels do look like they used the 3/4-ton center.

Re: Lathe with 3 Ford transmissions in Iowa

That's one of the cleanest transmission conversions that I've seen on a machine tool. Looks like it belonged there.

Back to the lathe with 3 transmissions. Are those large brake drums that they...

Re: Drake Sale:

I have had and am having a few old car parts made, so I understand the supply side. I would not want to be in their position, trying to bring new (old) products to market while keeping the rest...

Re: Flatheads breaking off engine stands and falling.

I am pretty sure the repair done in that article was on a race engine that had a clutch explosion. Cooks Machine did those repairs on engines that had extensive port work done, so it was worth the...

Re: 1946 merc steering box

The Timken numbers for the steering box bearings are as follows:

5BC - upper and lower roller bearing #68-3571A.
6 - bearing upper cup#B-3552
6CE - lower cup#8A3553

The worm should be...

Re: Steering box sector spline

It is .750 taper per foot. The serrations are a 90 degree included angle.

The plastic bag video is unbelievable. But at least she double bagged it...that ought to make it safe for transport.

Re: Installing a 32' Roadster Body

A related question. Does the frame welt go front to back all the way on the frame, under the firewall feet, front fenders and gas tank, or just under the body itself.

Thanks,

Re: Symptoms of worn out sector shaft?

Glad to hear you sorted this one out. The mounting bracket didn't come to mind, but makes perfect sense now.

Re: 1936 Steering Box Replacement

If you use a 37-39 box with original hardware intact, the 36 light switch will clip right in. No adapting required.

Re: Risk of using old (over 10 years) tires

My dad had a rear tire blow out on his 40 coupe a few years ago. The tire came apart, tore up the rear fender pretty bad and wrapped around the rear axle and nearly tore off the rear brake line. He...

Re: 48 to 52 f1 steering box

No, that is not the case here. 37-48 passenger car steering box internals are the same as 48-52 pickup internals when they are both either LHD or RHD.

LHD sectors have the roller canted to the...

Re: 48 to 52 f1 steering box

Most early Ford parts suppliers have the RHD worms. All other rebuild parts are the same as LHD, granted your sector shaft is rebuildable. And the comment above is correct, in that 37-48 Ford car...

Re: 30/31 v 32-34 steering box mounts

I assume you are referring to the "sector housing". If so, yes you can install a 30-31 Model A sector housing on a 32-34 steering box. I just did one with 15:1 internals for a Model A.
