Re: L-100 & 9" clutch

Ol' Ron said : "Displacement and compression is what increases the torque, not camshafts, they just move it around!!"

That's a very astute observation, and pretty darned accurate too!

Re: Fitting Sump

I installed the seals with the gasket sandwiched between the halves and abutting the crankshaft as you have pictured. I trimmed the seals flush after rolling them into their grooves tightly using a...

Re: rear rope seal

Shouldn't have a seal, as 38bill advised. Don't overfill the oil and it should do ok. However, pulling the pan and cleaning out any sludge is always a good plan. You may have a nice runner there!

Re: Need choke if stalls

If the accelerator pumps are working it should fire right up with a pump of the pedal. Look down the carb throats and operate the throttle...you should see fuel squirting down the carbs if the pumps...

Re: Starter brushes

Pull the springs back and cock them to the side so they are not pushing on the brushes. Then install the end cap followed by repositioning the springs.

Re: Uneven Head Dome Sizes

Ouch! Just asked for a cleaned up surface and that's what you got??? Wow...somebody needs a kick in the butt. Those heads are door stops now.
A little time spent setting up the cut would have...

Re: Condensers

Yes. I've been using Tubman's condenser for a few months now...probably 3500 miles...on my 8CM with 12v and Chev distributor. Very nice and works perfectly. It's mounted on the coil bracket.
A...

Re: Rear Main Seals

The good seals are "Best" brand and are supplied with a roll pin and instructions. FelPro may not use the same material or supply a pin.

Re: Rear Main Seals

The 8CM in my '41 Merc has the new style graphite seals and the properly installed roll pin. After 11,000 miles in the last 18 months it still hasn't dripped on the garage floor.

Re: 21 stud deck height, gasket thickness, etc. questions.

Concerning decking the block...even if you do consider a fairly severe decking (may be ill-advised due to strength lost) check closely at the effect this may have on valve seat areas. I decked an 8BA...

Re: Holley 885 leak down test

Modern fuel evaporates very quickly. In the past I've poured an inch of fuel into a small can and let it sit over night, then measured it in the morning to see how much had disappeared. It might work...

Re: Merc manifold bore spacing and size

"my eye says middle top row and 1 and 2 from left on middle row."

Correct! Two 2GV and one 2GC.

Re: A few questions on a 8BA

You should not have to cut the stems...those are definitely late style valves and retainers. Compress the springs and remove the keepers, shoot some lube on the stems and work the valves up and out....

Re: 3G alternator no charge light wiring

Yep, with 12v to both sides of the bulb it will not illuminate. That's the way most alternator charging system lights function.

Re: 3G alternator no charge light wiring

The wire going to the "I" terminal on the alternator is connected to one lead on the light, and the other lead on the light is connected to power when ign is "on". No other wires should be hooked to...

Re: Driving The 52 Merc

Nice, Ralph...I like the fact you're driving it as much as you can. One of the things I most enjoy about my '41 Merc is taking it out on gravel/dirt roads and cruising along at 30-35 mph just looking...

The battery is properly connected in positive ground configuration, correct? ('cause maybe I've done such things before....:o)

Re: remote oil filter, 59 ab, 36 coupe

You can mount that filter setup at any angle you wish to and it will work fine. Most filters like that have an anti drain back valve in them, but even if yours doesn't it's low enough that there will...

Re: Naphtha for cleaning carbs and fuel pumps

If you have gummy sticky brown residue from old evaporated gasoline, acetone is far better than most other "thinner type" liquids.

Marko39 mentioned the same, as well as the "Gunk" brand...

Re: Stuck engine after fuel pump failure

Hate to say it, but it sure sounds like it had enough fuel in the oil to do what dmsfrr said: damage one or more bearings on the crank. Even if you get it to turn it is likely going to fail shortly...
