My guess is you have one/or both of the light wires grounded and the ground wire hooked up to the lights
Disconnect everything and start over, insure ground wire is hooked up first, then high and lo...

I put two layers of electrical tape behind the switch on the gas tank as extra insurance when the same issue happened to me.
And yes, I'm using an after market switch (for now), as most of them are...

Soldered, not crimped, which is what you want to do.
The "crimped" style is NOT the way to go, take the little extra time and solder your ALL your connectors...you'll be much happier down the...

All the hinges on all four doors were welded to the body, guess the P.O. got tired of adjusting the doors.
Took me several weeks to get them all back to "normal"
