Re: Railroad Inspection Car

The story of a Victoria used as a railroad inspection car appeared in the Victoria Association newsletter, the Bustle in April 2015. The photo was on the cover, the story was on the third page.

Re: Swap meet etiquette / Luray

It is prudent to be very careful when approaching a seller to negotiate a lower price. You never know, some of these guys take it as a personal insult if you suggest they lower the price. I had a...

Re: Rear axle shaft thread broken

The two axles, the carrier and the ring gear can be removed from the car as an assembly without pulling the rear end out of the car.

By removing the left axle housing the assembly can be pulled...

Re: Battery Issue for a new owner

Check the generator cut-out located on top of the generator. The contacts may be stuck closed. That will certainly drain the battery through the generator.

Overhauling a Model A transmission is not difficult. You just need to be aware of the traps Henry laid for you. The attached link should be of help.

Re: Mitchell Overdrive problem

We had the same problem last summer with several installs. We had to ship two back to Mitchell for repair. The third one over time corrected itself. According to Steve Mitchell a new supplier of the...

Re: dropping the pan

Get some threaded stock the same thread size as the pan bolts. cut four pieces about two inches long and put a nut on them. Remove two bolts on each side and screw the four studs in place. Now when...

Re: U-joint special washer

The flat washer with the notch in it fits over the end of the transmission output shaft and prevents oil from leaking out through the splines. The Mitchell company offers one that has a rubber seal...

Re: Transmission bearings

Many of the suppliers were not even aware a switch was made. Those that are aware say that is all that is available. This is probably the greatest dis-service ever done to the Model A kingdom. It is...

Re: First time electrical problem

The four amps is the current flow through the ignition coil. When you switch the ignition on and the points should happen to be closed the circuit will draw a nominal four amps through the coil. A...

Re: Starter and fly wheel

Make sure the starter ring gear is flush up against the stop. Repos do not fit on the flywheel as tight as the originals. When the starter engages it wants to pull the ring gear away from the stop....

Re: Clutch adjustment

I think you are going to find that the adjustment you need is the fingers on the pressure plate. They should each be set at a nominal 5\8". Adjusting the linkage is only adjusting the throw out...

Re: Zenith carb overfloating at Choke GAV - why?

The threads in the casting for the GAV assembly and the GAV itself are a pipe thread designed to seal off a leak. However I have encountered castings where someone had ran a regular tap of the same...

Re: Zenith Rebuilding

I would avoid drilling it out as you can easily damage the threads. I have removed many with an easy technique. Take a torch and heat the area around the secondary well until it glows red, then drop...

Re: 6 to 12 Volt & Neg ground

Re: Zenith Troubles

The early Zeniths have a brass seat that screws into the base of the GAV tunnel. They look similar to the comp jet, but are definitely not the same, so don't mix them up. Ford eliminated the brass...

Re: 6 and 12 v Borg solenoid

You need to connect them up to a fully charged battery to correctly test them. They pull a heavy in-rush current when first activated and a battery charger may not have the power to handle it.
