Re: U Joint Housing

Thanks Tom. My bolt holes are symmetrical but that explains the two oblong holes in the gaskets.

U Joint Housing

Getting ready to reinstall the rear axle but feel intimidated by that erector set U Joint housing. Between the main shell, retention halves, gaskets, felt strips, and FAM bracket, there must be a...

Re: Follow up to Registration Woes

Thanks for sharing the rest of the story. Is the number on your title also visible somewhere on your vehicle ? Has the original number been retained ?

Re: Air Filter

I went the Hi-Boy route and like it. No pooled fuel or soggy K&N element.

Re: U Joint replacement Engine Out

Yep, just need to unbolt the U Joint enclosure. Removing the shift tower would also make handling a little easier.

In the Movies

Just watched "The Legend of Bagger Vance". Not a golfer but really liked all the Model As in the movie. The setting is 1931. Just curious if anybody had their vehicle in a movie and what it was...

Re: Model A Registration Woes

A really good read which highlights the murky interpretations for Model As.The concept of VIN numbers was not established until 1955, and therefore, the engine number or frame number is not actually...

Re: Model A Registration Woes

GREAT ADVICE !!
Eagle, you da man. Would just add that the frame number ideally must match the title number - especially important when the vehicle is sold at a later date to someone out of state. ...

Re: U Joint Quality

Did some research and agree. Needle bearings appear to be not the way to go on torque tube drive lines. Since the shafts are restrained they must be in perfect alignment to avoid side loads on the...

Re: New to this, looking for advice

Had the same lean problem. Turned out the shackle bushings and shackle on the lean side were badly worn. The perch bushing fell out in two pieces and the cross section of the shackle shafts were...

Re: U Joint Quality

https://www.bobdrake.com/FordItem.aspx?Item=HB-7090

Looking hard at the Bob Drake option. Since the needle bearings are sealed the unit would probably not benefit from filling the U joint...

U Joint Quality

Does anybody make a high quality US-made U joint ? Are 1928 -1948 U joints interchangeable ? Not impressed with a foreign-made unit I have. Spline bores appear to be off center and there is...

Re: Model A Registration Woes

Your situation can easily become "title hell". If DMV makes it complicated be prepared to pass on the deal and find a ride with a clear in-state title. Making the deal contingent on getting a clear...

Re: Rear spring shackles

If the bushings need to be changed it is necessary to remove, or at least loosen, the brake backing plates to get direct access to the bushing bores. Job simplified if the entire axle is pulled. ...

Re: Install generator

Most of us can pull a rear axle or drop a trans just like we did 50 years ago - just takes longer to recover.

Re: Standard vs HD Clutch Disc

The three release fingers terminate to adjustment studs secured by locknuts. Maybe not rocket science but would still welcome some insight from someone with experience adjusting a V8 pressure plate....

Re: Standard vs HD Clutch Disc

Saga continues. Checked the run out on the housing and flywheel and they dialed out to .004 and .003. The pilot and throw out bearings look new. The HD and standard Discs look very different. The...

Standard vs HD Clutch Disc

Does either disc perform any different ? The previous owner put in a new V-8 pressure plate and HD disc and that is when the clutch started chattering. Took it apart today. Will check the run out...

Wishbone/Trans Connection

I disconnected the radius rods at the trans and noticed even though I have the original style socket assembly, the ball had a rubber ball insulator on it. I know the rubber ball is used on the new...

Re: Trans Bearings

Liking the leak resistance of sealed bearings. Any serious longevity problems with using the double sealed bearings ? Suspect oil will eventually find its way past the seals. Understand u-joint...

Trans Bearings

Getting ready to change out the front and rear bearings. Is it better to go sealed or unsealed ? I lean toward unsealed.

U Joint Service

After a few hours of "cotter pin hell" finally pulled the rear axle. Discovered much play in the "rivet style" U Joint. What is the proper lube schedule for the U Joint and how is it serviced ? Is...

Re: Should I buy it?
