Re: Rethreading Spark Plug holes in Aluminum Heads

I have used both successfully.
The helicoil is fine if the plug seat in the head is not gouged or worn.
The Timesert has the advantage of having the plug seat as part of the unit so if you get the...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RON!

I am with you. I was here the first day. I talk to Shelly once in awhile.
We used to talk almost every other day.

Re: Navarro aftermarket heads

I am aware of all that. I was talking about 50 years ago.
We make our own heads from billets these days.

Re: Cam Specs Again

As far as I know, Isky never stamped his cams like that. They always had the name.

Re: Balancing wire wheels with steel plate welded inside

It is NOT recommended to weld on steel wheels.
They are manufactured by roll forming which puts big stresses in the metal. Some wheels are normalized after forming, some are not.
If you do weld, it...

Re: NOS 8RT camshaft

With the heels running out .006, it is not even worth discussing.

By the way, I have been in the cam business since 1952.

Re: NOS 8RT camshaft

To fix it I would need to know if it is a genuine Ford core. If it is there will be
Ford letters cast in the core somewhere along the line such as "8RT", 8ba, etc etc.

In the middle picture, can...

Re: NOS 8RT camshaft

Looks like you got a production reject.
The heel of the cam should be concentric.

Re: Navarro aftermarket heads

On the few street engines I have built with stock type chambers, I used either Edelbrock or Sharp.
I used those also on the race engines because they always welded reliably for the flat pistons.

One more option, try a better brand of heads.

Re: Off topic. Remember TV show Columbo?

Columbo is still on 2 channels here every night.
We never miss the ones with the dog.

That is correct.
I have always been an advocate of: If you are going to get into a hobby seriously, and by that I mean, actually do the required work and steps to make it happen, you need to get the...

Re: Adjustable Lifters

It does when you consider how many V8's they sold vs. 6's.

Re: Adjustable Lifters

It would have cost more to build with adjustable lifters.
It would have decreased the reliability.

Re: Valve angle (s)

You do not need hard seats in any flathead Ford engine except to repair cracks or damage.

We used to run 100% nitroethane + hydrazine with no hard seats.

Besides all else, they inhibit heat...

I can't believe no one suggested one of the most important things to do when rebuilding used machinery.

MAGNAFLUX.

For those not familiar with it, it is usually done after the parts pass VISUAL...

Re: What is the best head gasket for Alum heads

Smokey said he was the first to use aluminum paint and it was the high pigment type spray can of the day.
I have been using it ever since on street engines with copper gaskets..
It is not latex...

Re: Valve angle (s)

Using 30 degree on both will gain you some flow but with no other mods, you may not notice in the seat of pants.

3 angle is definitely good for more flow.

Knocking the cobs and corners off the...

Re: Adjustable Lifters

The factory had it right. Valve trains work best and last longest when they are light as possible.
The original STEEL lifters are the lightest stock lifters you can use. These are the ones with only...

Re: Oil Pump Shaft

I have never had a failure with them. I even used a used one I got from NASCAR once although it never ran a race.

Re: Oil Pump Shaft

I solved the problem by installing a belt driven Aviaid dry sump pump.
Been using them for years. No shafts to worry about.
