Ford OHV V8 (Y Block) Cast Iron Rods

Old timer told me the rods are cast iron!


Says you take the rod and hang it on a coat hanger.


Hit it with something metal.


If it goes 'Ting' it is forged steel.

More forum members would be a little more comfortable getting a brand new MSD box than buying a used 70's CDI off...

I don't know if those tips apply to our CDI box.Could.Will look into it.

That is one way to look at it and a good way.


MEL's are same family as Super Duty truck engines.

'62-63 Ford Mercury 406 Engine 7400 RPM Factory Stock

Found article about it in May 1962 How to Hop Up Your Engine.


Engine turns 7400 RPM on their dyno test!


They did not say it was still making power at that rpm but it did spin that fast.

'MEL from 58 thru 60 had the same bell pattern as the FE blocks'


FE's came out in '58 too.Sounds like they kept it simple.Same big mold piece for the rear of engine.

Right now this is the upshot of it.


160 hp at 5000 rpm stock engine.


210 hp at same rpm with Latham Supercharger kit.No changes to engine.
