Don't forget that after the oil pan has been drained it still has about 1/2 quart of oil in it that is sitting in the dipper tray.

Looking around online I see that cylindrical roller bearings are available in single or multiple row. I'm wondering how the multiple row would work, rather than multiple single row.

Standard ball bearings, 6200 series, are not designed to take side loading, 7200 series (angular contact) ball bearings are designed to take side loading. They might be an option.

I would stand the housing on a perfectly flat and level surface, place a known good level on the top end, rotate as necessary to see if it's level in all directions.

With rusty springs on my '31 shocks aren't needed for dampening, the springs hardly flex.
