Run a thermostat ALL the time. Live in the mountains of Arizona. We probably do not get as cold as you in the winter, but the A warms up faster with the thermostat and runs better when warm.

When you do the continuity test of the switch and armored cable make sure the battery of the vehicle is disconnected. You can destroy an analog ohm meter by measuring voltage on the ohms scale.
