Re: Pinion Gear Compatibility
I found someone that compared the pinions for the two sets. The pinion gear is smaller for the 37:9 set. You can determine which pinion you've got by measuring the diameter at the big end. It is...

Re: Pinion Gear Compatibility
Thanks. That’s not what I wanted to hear, but it’s what I need to know. I think I might try a trial build and see if they seem to run together ok.

Re: Pinion Gear Compatibility
Ok, here are some photos. The pinion has 9-7-4. It is difficult to read the 37 gear, but I can make out a 5 and 8, so it does not match. The 34 gear is clean as a whistle. So what you guys are...

Re: Pinion Gear Compatibility
Tom, I am following your excellent article for this build. Thanks. I've got the number from the pinion and will look more closely at the ring gears.
Do you think that Ford would have machined each...

Re: Rucker overhead valve conversion
The overheads I've seen do not provide much change in torque. Since they breath better, the torque is extended to higher rpm before it falls off, so the peak hp is greater. If you use a taller rear...

Pinion Gear Compatibility
I have two ring gears, 34 and 37, and a 9 tooth pinion gear. Is there a way to tell which ring gear goes with the pinion or does it not make a difference?

Re: Embarking on a Laycock-overdrive odyssey
I just saw this thread while I was researching another issue. I love these overdrives. I have rebuilt several A-types and have one in a Triumph. I have less experience with J-types. I have a J-type...

Length of Rear Spring
Can someone tell me the distance between shackle holes for a rear spring with no load? I don't have one I can measure. Thanks, Larry Young

Re: Drive shaft taper
Thanks for the response. I assumed Ford would have published this spec. I measured mine at 1/2 intervals. I get 0.747 (+ or - maybe 0.005) at the small end. I get 0.919 at 1.6 (your midpoint). These...

Drive shaft taper
I have to shorten a Model A driveshaft. I plan to cut at the taper end and have the taper, keyway and threads remachined. The driveshaft I have shows some trauma in the center part of the taper....

Re: 1940 Locking Steering Column
Finally! Drilling out the lock mechanism didn't work. That tang would not budge. I finally forced the housing off using the press. Should have done that sooner. I hate to use brute force, but it was...

Re: 1940 Locking Steering Column
The housing moves within the slot in the column, so I don't believe it is rusted to the column. I'm thinking of drilling into the lock mechanism since its shot anyway.

Re: 1940 Locking Steering Column
Its hard to believe, but I'm still working on this problem. I successfully removed the pin using the a slide hammer as suggested by Ken/Alabama. However, the lock mechanism would still not come out....

Re: 1940 Locking Steering Column
Ken, thanks so much, that's the piece of the puzzle I needed.
I wasn't too keen on the evaporust. Most of those products are acids and most penetrants have acid in them already.

Re: 39 gears in Model A drivetrain
The most useful part of the kits may be the pedal assembly. The rearend should have standard gears. Is that 3.78 for an A (same as v8)? The transmission will also be standard 16/28 gears which gives...

Re: 39 gears in Model A drivetrain
I believe it has a counterweighted B crank. I understand these can be hard to grind due to the counterweights. I may decide to switch to a Skat crank if it simplifies things. Dan, I need to call you...

Re: 39 gears in Model A drivetrain
I probably should explain more about this project. I've got a Model T engine with an SR Fronty head and SOC. The head was originally a pushrod setup, but in 1929 they developed the conversion to an...

Re: 1940 Door Windows
Kube and Doublepumper,
Thanks for the response. The metal surround is probably the answer. These repros are not designed for a '40, but most of the vendor sell them for it. I'd call this false...
