No, it is not nessecary to remove the exhaust. However, I seem to recall, I removed the pitman arm as well as the soft top. 1, to clear the exhaust and 2, there is not enough head room for...

Both my 28 Model A and my 29 Chevy have the holes exactly in the middle of the steering. In other words as Maako says, in the centre of your view area.

Many old cars were positive earth right up to the sixties. MG and even the early E Types were positive earth.. If memory serves, it had something to do with prevention corrosion or something....
