Re: Carburetor Options

I'm running two model B carbs on two of my model A's . A larger carb or dual carbs will add a little top speed . My experience has been that a completely stock model A will run 60 MPH if in good...

Re: Engine problem - maybe broken cam

More than likely the problem is a broken piston skirt . The original pistons had a split skirt , all the way from the oil ring to the bottom of the skirt . I've seen a few model A engines drop a...

The model A&B cam shafts are forged steel not cast iron like most later cams. Its not likely that a forged cam could or would break .

Re: Transmission Bearings?

I forgot to mention but I always replace the reverse idler shaft as well . I can't think of any other . I can't think of any other parts or hardware that should be replaced unless it is something...

Re: Transmission Bearings?

If it was mine I would remove the transmission and replace all of the bearings and the shaft that the cluster gear bearings ride on . check the gears for pits . Usually if it doesn't jump out of any...

Re: Fan and Water Pump power consumption?

I think it was covered in one of the early Secrets of Speed Society magazine . I'm not sure which one . Jim Brierley would probably know . The best that I recall Jim was the editor or some such at...

Re: Mallory distributor parts availability

To set the timing , the Mallory distributors must be rotated like modern distributors . The Mallory distributors that I have point mostly to number four cylinder contact in the distributor cap when...

Re: Starter Not Running

When the starter drive locks up against the flywheel the engine can't be turned with the hand crank , that's why pushing or rocking the car in third gear or removing the starter is necessary ....

Re: Starter Not Running

Grease or oil on the helix of the starter drive will cause the starter to just spin but not engage

Re: Block Sealer, New headgasket

While block sealer may not be necessary it is very good insurance that the head won't have to come back off to try and correct the problem . The cost of the sealer will be small compared to the price...

Re: Steering Damper

I feel that a steering stabilize-damper would be an improvement to any vehicle. If a damper causes more steering effort , I've never noticed it . If anything a damper seems to make steering easier...

Re: Steering Damper

The damper wasn't original but does no harm other than losing points in national judging . A damper won't fix worn out parts . Common sense tells me that a damper will stabilize the steering in rough...

Re: Carburetor question

I would remove the float valve assembly and remove any trash that could prevent the needle from setting in the float valve seat . As always , I replace the float valve gasket any time that the float...
