Re: Question on cam gear marks

Not to be a pain, but have you worked on one of these early flathead engines? :D The end of the cam has a t-slot in it, that is offset, so the distributor can only go on in one direction, it cannot...

Re: Valve seats. How to remove?

What is going on is that you are "heat shrinking" the seat . . . once it gets cold (you can quench it), it will fall out.

Re: Timing light

I use my 12V one on my 6V cars - by dragging out a 12V battery to power the timing light. Kind of a pain in the butt, but I haven't found a timing light with dial back, a tach and other modern...

Re: Question on cam gear marks

Checking the cam timing with a degree wheel is never a bad idea - I always do this. BUT, unless the cam is manufactured incorrectly (or you want to alter the timing), and both gears are correctly...

Re: Skip's rebuilt coils

Any information to share?

Given your comments, my guess is that he removes the stock coil and puts a new "drop in" replacement (that he has made up) and pots it in . . . but that is just a...

Re: 1936 Overheating Problem

This is definitely true for the later 37 - 48 pumps, but I'm not sure he has new and improved impellers for the early in-head mounted pumps?

He rebuilt a couple sets of 32 pumps for me - the...

Re: Thread - I screwed up

From my perspective, don't think it matters all that much. You're trying to turn the fan on when the water gets to a certain temperature, hoping that once it gets turned on that it generates enough...

Re: Remote oil filter. Help!

Todays oils and additives are much better than when these cars were originally produced - you can run just about any name-brand oil and you'll be fine. While many of our engines have been ran...

Re: Remote oil filter. Help!

I used the stock bypass filter cannister and then housed a full-flow 100% filtration system inside of it. Keep in mind that I have a specially modified oil-pump that is blocked off on the internal...

Re: Help! 59ab oil pan fitment

I run the late 8BA pump in ALL of my flathead builds (with the late truck pickup) - and add/modify a baffle to fit.

Re: AutoLite 216's in Offy heads

The advantage of 3/4" reach plugs is that you have the widest selection of brands, insulator types, heat ranges, plug application types, etc.. If you've found a 1/2" reach plug that you like, no...

Re: Cam installation issue.

1st: Make sure you mic the cam journals before you order cam bearings - have seen guys with .010 cam journals (and they didn't know it) - with STD bearings in the block. Cam goes in really easy . ....

Re: AutoLite 216's in Offy heads

Given that the valves are angled and the actual location of the spark plug hole and that a standard head gasket is about .052 thick, are you measuring the clearance at the location where the spark...

Re: Engine Shop Expectations (Flathead 8ba)

The most important questions you should be asking are related to how many flatheads have they recently built and do they have the necessary experience, tooling and skills to do the work? The area...

Re: Breaking free old frozen transmissions: Tricks?

In looking at the last transmission pictures, it does not appear that those gears will be usable - you can see heavy rust pitting on everything. I'm with Mart - rust pitting on precision machined...

Re: Which is easier

Also, upon reassembly, I have a little block of wood that I wedge between the top of the torque tube and the floor-pan - to push it down into the approximately correct position. It tends to want to...

Re: AutoLite 216's in Offy heads

There are many ways to skin this cat - heck, I'd just pick one. You can run longer plugs with 'shims' (I'd prefer them to be made of copper), you can chamfer/change the bottom portion of the head...

Re: Which is easier

I do it the same way with a 32 - it is not hard to 'align' the front radiator, grille and hood as about the only real adjustment (other than maybe some spacers/shims under the radiator mount tabs) -...

Re: Took the 39 to the drag strip

When I ran my '34 more-door Sedan as a 16 year old at the 'Antique Nationals', with a new 286 cube flathead (first flathead I built), I ran consistent 15.21s, 15.22s with a 4.11 rear. In...

Re: Isky or Potvin

And here are some pictures of the 505A that Pete is talking about - with some side-by-side shots against the 404A.

I have yet to run the cam, need to build a very "special" engine for it.

Re: Which is easier

I've done it both ways - probably too many times! LOL. I've come to the conclusion that I much prefer to pull the engine/trans as one unit. This just makes working on the whole package (clutch,...

Re: New Guy with Many, Many Questions

Welcome to the Barn! I don't have a 39', so I can't be of much help on the original engine compartment situation. However, if you have mechanical questions on the engine, trans or drivetrain, be...
