Re: Cam Gear Noise

I'm trying to figure why light load would change the noise if it's cam/crank gear related. There is so little difference in loading on the cam and gears whether or not the engine is...

Re: Best stock 8BA camshaft

Charlie, I agree with Tubman on the 8CM cam being very nice in a semi-stock engine. I am running one in a 260" Merc with good quench, a 2GC carb and Chev distributor and it performs excellently....

Re: Gear ratio's and final drives

Your ratios now:

13.09-7.70-4.84-3.25-2.47

With 4.11 gears:

16.56-9.74-6.12-4.11-3.12

Re: Gear ratio's and final drives

Joe, to figure overall ratios simply multipy the transmission gear ratio X the rear gear ratio. Your 4.03 X 3.25 will be 13.09:1 overall. Changing to a 3.50 first will be 14.1:1 and be virtually...

Re: 41 mercury engine question

Yes, a very good chance the heads just have a Large "A" cast in the centers. The original engine would be blue. There may be a small "99" stamped in the right front top of the block between the...

Re: Intake gasket failure

My recent 255 Merc build did the same. Intake gasket was from a "Best Gasket" full set and was a two layer paper construction. It tore at the holes you refer to and also separated and migrated inward...

Re: Valve lubrication question on 8BA

It's just a combination of oil mist and oil thrown by the rotating crankshaft and rods. Later engines have drilled squirt holes in the rods to supply a bit more to the cam lobes and piston skirts but...
