Re: Removing Lug Nut from Spinning Stud

This is getting out of control with great ideas.
Drilling it out so the wheel can be removed is a simple and inexpensive job. If he doesn't have drill bits, he's not going to have all the other...

Re: A scammer is trolling the Ford Barn WTB ads

Apparently the Friends and Family request is common among scammers.

Re: Value of an Un-Restored Model A Engine

Yep and many for other reasons. You just can't know. There are stories all over about engines bought that "ran fine", were "rebuilt", or were even hopped up - V8s with Merc cranks, etc. only to be...

Re: Flow testing a carb

You are basically setting it up to see how many units flow over time... just like when building an airplane. You are wanting to see if it is flowing enough for the motor.
I saw a Youtube video about...

Re: LED headlight bulbs

I would like this info as well. 10+ years ago, with vintage motorcycles, the jury was hung on headlight upgrades due to various electrical reasons. I'm suspecting this has changed.

I would agree...

Re: Value of an Un-Restored Model A Engine

A bit more since you spent the time to disassemble, check, bore it(presumably without new pistons yet in hand), and chase down the engine number(?). Add a pressure check and you have reason to ask a...

Deleted my rant but cannot disagree... even though I'm not sure exactly why you say this.

Re: counterbalanced crank welds

I cannot say this with any authority but I think this is the way the weights were intended to be added. I think full-pen welds all around the weights would bend the crank. In fact, I'm pretty sure it...

Re: counterbalanced crank welds

I have one that way as well. It was run, I think in a Pietenpol aircraft. The welds are short as you say on the ends of the weights but are clearly clean, well-penetrated tig welds.
I'd run it.

Re: Value of an Un-Restored Model A Engine

Seth, I haven't seen anyone say throw them away, just that because rebuilds are so costly, they are worth very little as a core. I, too, have 4-5 flathead V8s and lots of parts. I see people asking...

Re: Value of an Un-Restored Model A Engine

LOL. Can't blame him. There is nuance in this world and some respect for others time and cheap prices. My family did occasional garage sales in the 80s. Our outgrown stuff - not flipping stuff. My...

Re: Value of an Un-Restored Model A Engine

Lots of great suggestions but it sounds like he wants out. We’ve all been there - a project that stalled but has a good bit invested in it - you just lose the mojo and wisely acknowledge you don’t...

Re: Safety cage?

So are you afraid of a rollover or of a side impact? By the time you rule out the possible next worst scenario, and on and on, it will likely be silly looking and a source of a false sense of...

Re: Rear Hub Wobble/Drum turning?

Interesting. I mounted the offending drum/hub on a wheel - in this case a '32 wheel and torqued the nuts to 50ft/lbs. The gaps drew up with no measurable gap between hub and drum. They are clearly...

Re: Rear Hub Wobble/Drum turning?

Thanks. Well to my surprise, I found three studs that allowed .004 - .010 gap under the hub inside the drum. So the hub is not completely seated to the drum on one side. When swaging I had all studs...

Re: Rear Hub Wobble/Drum turning?

I'll have to look again. It didn't appear too worn but nothing I own is beautiful and much of it is worn out old stuff("ran when parked" type stuff). I think one was off a spare rear and one was off...

Rear Hub Wobble/Drum turning?

So I was going to turn some new cast drums on rear hubs to true them. While apart I quickly checked them on a lathe for excessive hub warpage but didn't detect any(using an old axle taper). After...

Re: Wheel stud replacement

Unless your hub is known to be true, make sure a check is done. I just did two new cast drums on hubs from a rear I have around. I think it is a bad repro hub. The taper doesn't appear to be...
