I had a similar situation. The wire on mine was used to hold the dog bone in place while the engine and gearbox were removed. These early "28 cross shafts are a different beast. You can find a lot...

You could try inserting sections of wood to replace the stuff that is aged. Then you could tack off to it.

If it is an Australian, right hand drive car then it most likely was wood. Just like updraught said.
