Re: New engine - intermittent backfiring - stuck valve?

Might try some Marvel Mystery Oil as a first step. Squirt some directly in the carb and then add 4 oz. to a full tank of gas. Sticking valves are not unusual and MMO is often the cure.

Re: t 5 tranmission

Pretty interesting discussion. Seems there are clearly technical benefits to the mod. Is there a philosophical element to be considered ? Most agree that safety belts, turn signals, and electrical...

Re: Fall 2020

2935, have to agree. Between COVID, fires, hurricanes, and crazy politics here to the south we are all waiting for 2020 to stop so we can jump off. Interesting how every photo looks better when it...

Re: 6v Alternator

Yep, that would be your BX40 or slightly larger BX41. This is known as a cogged belt.

Re: U joint. How much play is acceptable?

Quality is the big issue in locating a new U Joint. I bought a new unit from one of the regular parts houses and was disappointed. It had more play than your used U Joint and the spline was off...

Re: Convert to 12 Volt ?

My 31 came with a 12 volt, negative ground, alternator system. I like the faster cranking, 12volt compatibility with electronic devices, and capability to get a readily available jump. If I had a...

Re: Zenith Carb Leak Puzzle

With a good shut off valve there shold be no dripping at all. Recommend disconnecting the fuel line at the carb and placing the end in an empty bottle for a period of time. If any gas collects in...

Re: Car Will Not Start--No Apparent Spark

Interesting caper. Can't process voltage at the fixed point. Just curious - is there continuity between the fixed point (points open, key off) and say a head bolt ? Seems like something amiss in...

Re: Brake Conversion? Or not.

This really falls in the same category as turn signals, 12 olt conversion, seat belts, V-8 clutches, electronic ignition, etc. Just a matter of how far from original you are willing to go. ...

Re: Rear Spring Installation

Sounds like the spring may not be conformally located in the saddle of the crossmember. If all else fails, might consider removing the spring from the axle and mounting it in the saddle "unsprung"...

Re: Carb leak

Had the smell of gas in the garage after the 31 was parked overnight with the Shut Off valve closed. Finally disconnected the fuel line at the carb and stuck it in an empty bottle overnight. Next...

Re: PCV valve good idea?

Additionally, Model As do not handle vacuum leaks very well and a PCV system is a conrolled vacuum leak designed into the system. Suspect idle quality would be impacted to some extent. Not sure...

Re: Rattling noise while driving

Look close and try to determine if your throw out bearing has separated. May need a throw out bearing change. If so, need to pull back the rear axle and drop the trans to remove the bearing. ...

Re: Transmission noise

Yep, U-Joint would be the primary suspect to investigate first. Since they are a hassle to change (must pull the rear axle) they are often past their service life. Finding a quality replacement...

Re: Transmission "jack" ?

Hey Del - I too know about 70+. I just changed out a clutch on my 31 by myself. I threaded in a short nipple into the drain plug hole on the trans and then lowered the assembly on to my floor jack...

Re: Help!!!!

Might try some Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas and a direct shot into the carb to lube the valves.
