Re: My "new" 260 inch Merc is a BEAST!

Ron, I used your installation pictures as an example when I did this one. Thank you very much for posting your work on that. It helped a bunch! My belt just clears the Chevy distributor...

Re: My "new" 260 inch Merc is a BEAST!

The belt setup uses the stock style early pumps with the wide belt. Same as '41 Merc (and the same era Fords) originally had...rear edge of pulleys 1" from pump mounting surface of the block. I used...

Re: My "new" 260 inch Merc is a BEAST!

Passenger side. Alternator is a 90 Amp Nippondenso from a John Deere skid steer loader. The idler is also Deere that I turned down to 1.5" diameter and mounted to the RH leg of the Speedway...

Re: My "new" 260 inch Merc is a BEAST!

A couple pics. The belt routing under the distributor and using early short pumps and crank pulley is a version of ideas by 'Ol Ron and another member here who gave me the idea of using an idler to...

How thick is the surface of that lifter where it meets the stem of the valve? Just curious...:)

Thumbs up My "new" 260 inch Merc is a BEAST!

I want to thank all you guys who post their engine tips, "secrets", tuning know-how and experiences with different combinations because I used a lot of that information to build a 260" Merc that far...

Re: Early V8 Dyno Work

Ya' know, Ron- I wondered if maybe you had done this before at some time. Not surprising! I am sure impressed with your way of thinking.

Re: 1939 pickup 1/2 ton engine noise

It sure sounds like two cables may be reversed...I'd start there. Almost certainly ignition related in my opinion.

Re: Early V8 Dyno Work

Thank you for the information and pictures. Very nice! Looks like some serious work on the 200 HP unit with the pistons out of the holes and heads counterbored to suit with good quench distances....

Re: 8ba Heads 7RT to EAB.

Hi Phil. Stock bore of 3.188 plus .020" would be 3.208" . Could that be what your seeing? .125 over would be 3.313" . Please let us know how the EAB heads perform!

Re: Correct Head torque

flatjack's correct...the sealer you used doesn't completely harden and will be fine for retorque. I use it every day (I rebuild diesel engines) for both oil and water thread sealing and it is very...

Re: 8BA compression issues

B&S has the same opinion as I do...Get everything ready to drive, fire it up, do a quick check for leaks, noises and check the ignition timing. Then get on the road and drive it as suggested. Nothing...

Re: 8BA compression issues

You have it absolutely correct. Your description of "valve rocking" and assumption that more performance oriented cams will make the lift at tdc while rocking more apparent is spot-on. Well...

Re: Installing hub races - what lube?

I've always just coated the bore with motor oil. A solid surface (like the concrete floor) is best to keep the hub from bouncing, and a fairly heavy hammer will work great. Make sure to get the race...

Re: What is the price of a rebuilt flathead??

I agree. In fact, by inspecting and properly measuring the used parts and either condemning them or judging them fit for reuse you are teaching the student valuable lessons in engine work. The same...

Re: 8BA compression issues

The problem with that is the engine won't start yet due to the extremely low compression issue. Hasn't ever been run since the years-ago rebuild. I do believe he's on the right track and following a...

Re: 8BA compression issues

It sounds like the next step since valve timing appears to be correct. The springs really shouldn't be the cause of your poor compression testing results. Any spring capable of closing the valve...

Re: 8BA compression issues

If it were me at this point I would place #1 piston at TDC and slowly rotate the crank pulley 2"-3" left and right watching the valves on that cyl. If they don't move, rotate the crank a full turn and...

Re: Oil leak from helmet distributor?

No leak-good deal! The blow-by from the pan corner vent is normal and by design. As for the residual smoke from the breather/oil fill tube, that's normal after shut down as well...just the fumes left...

Re: Oil leak from helmet distributor?

Don't those bolts go through to crankcase? (can't remember) If so, sealer on the threads may be the fix.
