Electrolysis is an option a battery charger and some washing soda. I've done several sets need to treat with metal prep afterwards to stop flash rusting.

There's an angle bracket to connect curved panel to lower body panel. Maybe that's what you see.

The 28 / 29 are not the same as the 30 different latch and handle. And yes, a mismatch and repo parts are a good bet.

That's one of the reasons they rotted along the bottom the fold trapped dirt and moisture. If I remember correctly there was a couple of spot welds.

Folded and crimped is the way I did it on the bottom edge. I left tabs on top of the repair panel drilled to slip over the fender bolts to hold while welded. Photo of photos so not real clear last...

No way WD 40 would loosen that up it was covered in powder coating not even a crack. The powder coating was smoking before it came loose it's a reproduction part, so nothing harmed. I tried PB...
