Watch that you don't put stress on the steering column.
It is attached to the bottom of the fuel tank which will lift along with the body.
Those fuel tank column brackets can leak so be careful...

Could it be that the split caps are binding against the u-joint when tightened?
Is it a reproduction u-joint? Some have had problems with the repro's

I measured mine as you can see, it is slightly smaller on the ends near the sockets.
The section I measured is suppose to have part of the hinge around it but the hinge has been missing for a long...

Did you clean the contact surfaces of the points?
If you have power at the point arm but no spark at the plugs it may be the contact surfaces are corroded....I had to clean mine this spring.....

When I first got my pickup and inspected the brakes I found the e-brake clevis pins installed opposite the correct way, with the split-pins outboard.
You can see the wear...through to the pin...

I replaced the coil and re-tested and I had a hot blue...
