grungy carb

I have a grungy pot metal carb that obviously spent some time in the woods. Can I soak it in evaporust to clean it up?

Still on cold starts, something binds causing the engine to speed up. I control the high rpm with the ign switch. Today
it took several trys before the engine would no race up. Driving me nuts....

There is a grease fitting on the 39 springs in the canter. It needs a special bolt. I have it on my39 Ford and 40 Merc. More later.
My 40 merc has the spring shields

blackish engine oil

I change oils a couple 3 months ago. Used Pennzoil. Truck driven since only a few miles. Oil blackish again. I'll check as to what oil I used. detergent I think 10W40

If I loosen 3 head bolts to install an oil filter, do I risk a head gasket leak?

Use the tool. If you start by pounding on the pin with a punch, the pin will fatify in the hole. Also I found that the pin and hole can wear differently depending on the body style.

Concur. Back in the day I jacked up my '54 Merc convert on a flat floor to change the tranny. While under it, it rolled forward. Always have a jack stand(s) involved. A fraternity brother jacked up...

Bruce of MN is an absolute hero. After lots of study and efforts, the hood is back together and works just fine. The noncolor- matched bungee cord has been retired.

Oil filter on 39 pickup

If I add an oil filter, do I need to worry about a head gasket leak after loosening the 3 filter-mounting head nuts.
