Perhaps you have a starter bolt too long and when the clutch is pushed the flywheel is rubbing the bolt end?

That's they way I found mine, bolts up from the bottom. When I re installed the equalizer I tried it the other way, then ended up checking my pictures and flipped them to save my sanity.

I remember redoing the 31 AA truck cowl,- 51- holes including a 2" and an 11/2".
Took a long time and a whole bunch of plugs to bring her back to stock.
We figured the original Unit had a Hydraulic...

I think you'd have a better profile for adhesion using a sand/glass blast.
Often I'll blast first and wire wheel it after to ensure it's really clean.

If you do the repair you can cheat a bit using the same size in copper tubing. it bends easily and will tin very quickly so soldering it in is easy. Once tested you can paint it with BBQ Flat Black...

Here's a quick fix, pick up a length of shrink tube that will just slide over the over-flow tube. Warm it up with a BBQ lighter and seal that crack.

I find it easier with the shell out of the way to secure the pads, bottom bolts, springs, washers, and cotter pins. Then slip the shell on and secure it.
