If the axle has a rear backing plate center cover (Dana/spicer) they are the clip style , if it has a pop out differential it is not the clip in type ,I have seen those axles replaced with later 9...

While the heads are off try measuring the stroke to see if it may be a Merc. engine. in a ford truck , I found a Merc engine in a large truck once.

I tried filing some heads on an old Mercury when I was a kid, what I didn't do was heat them up and add the braze, needles to say it turned loose an it wiped out the engine, we just left the old car...

Anything is possible ,you won't know for sure till it is torn down and cleaned ,inspected, magged , pressure tested , sonic tested , looks like it may not be cost effective any needed sleeves etc....
