Maybe poor memory, but I thought the '55 Mercury that I had in college had a voltage reducer block in it for the gauges.

Looks like it was cobbled together to make it run a bit. That radiator position is .... strange! :-)

Could a piece of clear fuel line temporarily installed between the existing line and the pump tell you if the pump is sucking air along with the fuel from the tank? Bubbles along wit the fuel?

Had a Michelin do that while on the spare tire carrier on my old van. While inside a vinyl tire cover. What a mess.

Cause: old tires, used or not.

I think you can see the original transmission clearly in the second picture. I suspect the OD transmission will require some serious modification to the cross member to allow it in there.
