The first two of ford33's photos are reminiscent of the '32 grains which were a mixture of burl and straight grains depending on the time period and body style.

That's the real deal - correct cross section shape and fabric reinforced. It is a hundred times more suitable despite being used.

With respect, David, it is an un-vented block and therefore it is older than '35 and since it is not a '32 block, that leaves either '33 or '34.

Perhaps the practice varied by assembly plant, but the head out approach on bolts did minimize fracturing the paint on the parts when the fasteners were tightened thereby reducing the corrosion risk...

Depends on the application and the condition of the older gaskets. The only general rule might be direct contact with gasoline where new gaskets' material might be better suited to do the job.
