Re: just biought a 1956 Mercury Montclair

On the data plate from the drivers door does it show exterior 'color codes'?
- IF - Merc used a similar format to Ford there would be more than one color shown on the data plate.
The first color...

Re: An oil dipstick dilemma

I haven't had a 302 since the early 80's and I've never swapped one into a 50's Ford, so bear with me a moment...
Might the original oil pan on the 302 have been changed, rear sump to front sump? If...

Re: An oil dipstick dilemma

I'd think this is very normal on a resto-mod.
When taking significant parts of a driveline and putting them into a vehicle they were never designed to fit in there's going to be a lot of 'What can...

Re: 56 T-bird rebuild

IIRC, on some other years/makes/models of engine that are more common than Y-blocks the crank & cam timing chain marks can be in line with each other and/or may also do double duty and are related to...

Re: 56 T-bird rebuild

The seal in the timing cover rides on the small end of the damper pulley hub, not the crankshaft.

If that's the keyway for the crankshaft timing gear I'm seeing just above & left of the small...

Re: An oil dipstick dilemma

Here's a start on it...
"E5TE"
E = 1980's
5 = fifth year = 1985
T = Truck
E = Engine part

Re: 56 T-bird rebuild

The seal in the timing cover that rides on the small end of the damper pulley hub will often wear a groove in it, or the small end of the hub may be pitted from rust (photo 1 below). The repair...

Re: 56 T-bird rebuild

Yes.
For whatever reason, when Ford made the Y-block engines the timing gear marks and installation procedure are not related to the position of the piston in cyl #1.

If the crank & cam shaft...

Re: 56 T-bird rebuild

With the crank and cam gears in the "12 pin"/installation position, yes I think cyl #1 is approx BDC and the distributor rotor points near to the #6 wire.
If you're going to replace the chain,...

Re: 56 T-bird rebuild

No, the "12 pins between the marks" position on the crank & cam gears is not related to cyl #1 TDC.

Re: An oil dipstick dilemma

They may not have had the original, been in a hurry and used whatever was handy.

The dipstick tube I found on my y-block was cut down from something else and 'almost' fit.
The dipstick itself...

Are you sure the timing chain is new? It looks a bit loose in this photo.

Re: 56 T-bird rebuild

Ignore the position of the distributor rotor. It's not relevant at this point.

With the spark plugs out, use the damper pulley bolt to rotate the crankshaft until the keyway and timing mark on the...

Re: Carb on Stock '55 Vic?

Without other evidence I wouldn't automatically make that assumption.
An oem / nos manual choke could well have been added by a previous owner, and much more easily than upgrading to the newer...

Re: Carb on Stock '55 Vic?

A quick way to confirm if you have a '55/'56 style distributor or a '57+ is to look at how the rotor is indexed on the shaft.
The '55/'56 has a 'flat' side (and the two springs 40cpe mentioned) ...

Re: Intro post

The wheel / lug-nut bolt pattern on my '55 (Bird) is 5 x 4.5, not 4.25
The 5 x 4.5 is very common for Ford wheels.

I'll see what I can find out about the diameter of the rotors, etc.
