Re: 30w oil

Wear happens with cold, thick oil.

At no point in normal operation will a 0W-40 get thinner than the SAE40 - they are both the same viscosity when hot, which is when they are the thinnest.

Re: flathead teds brake equalizers

We HAD to use the top spring, to stop the front left wheel locking and staying on!

They really work great, and minimise the fiddling required during adjustment.

Re: Foam in cooling system, overflowing

Ours used to foam, and loose coolant, when climbing hills.

After getting the radiator rodded out, refilling with the same coolant, no more issues.

The previous owner, using water only, hasn't...

Re: Who still uses a 'stick shift' in their modern vehicle ?

My Wifes BMW is manual: 2001 525i - the reason i bought it so fast! Very, very, rare here in NZ.

My other car is a '72 "1200" Standard VW Beetle, though it's 1600TP powered now.

Our only other...

Re: Any recommendations for a basic test meter?

I haven't read the whole thread, but please do not use cheap meters for household voltage tests etc - They can be very dangerous.

I realize these cheapies are just going to be used for automotive...

Re: Electric fuel pump durability

Agree!

I had an Airtex replacement pump in my Wifes old Subaru. It whined so loud (stright out of the box!) that you could still hear it at 60MPH.

The 3 replacements I requested were the same,...

Re: Fender protective undercoating?

Wurth SKS (Now stoneguard aqua?) is awesome for this.

It's also water based, so cleans up easily, but once it's on there, it stays there.

It's like the stuff the underside of modern german cars...

Re: Heating Painted parts in Oven

It works great...

Also, the dishwasher is a fantastic parts washer, and the sink in our skullery is 20" X 32".

I'm not joking... my Wife just rolls her eyes now :-D

Re: radiator foaming over

Our foamed like a bar-steward, untill we had the radiator rodded out, so it cooled properly.

Climbing hills, it would gush foaming coolant all over the place, even out the radiator cap.

4 goes...

Yep - seen that (in general terms - not your posts etc).

Sometimes people ARE knowledgable.

Sometimes they THINK they are, but are open to learning or suggestions.

Sometimes they KNOW they...

Re: Brake floater question

Dad spoke to Ted at the local club, after we had issues with the front left sticking on.

After adjusting the brakes a little differently, it didn't happen again, however, Dad has sisnce put the...

Re: 3 - 2 downshift

We rebuilt the trans, AFTER learning to drive it well :D

Shame that is so shaky, but it's brilliant at showing it's done - not too much talking and you can hear the engine.

Re: 3 - 2 downshift

^^^This!

Example; Lets say I start my downshift at 25MPH. By the time I'm in 2nd, I'm at 20 MPH:

When I double clutch, with the clutch out in neutral, I have to rev the engine up to a little...

Re: Mitchell 26% or 36%?

If you aren't sure, the 26 is the "safe" bet.

Ever driven a car with far too big wheels on? Takes all the power away, AND ruins fuel economy! I had an 850cc car, that I put big wheels on, but had...

Re: Cork VS neoprene gasket in gas gauge

No ethanol in our fuel, and the neoprene swelled until the guage would jam showing full, unless you pushed the float down with a stick - the same one we had to use to measure the fuel level :D

I...

Re: Cork VS neoprene gasket in gas gauge

^^^ THis.

Our neoprene gaskets swelled up, and stopped the gauge working properly.

Maple syrup - no leaks, and doesn't dissolve in petrol.

Re: more oil pressure

Nice post! It should make it clear to people how it works, if they don't already know.

The Model A engine doesn't rely on pressure to the bearings, it requires enough flow from the valve chamber...

Re: Steering boxes

We have a RHD 29 Tudor, I seem to recall was sold here in NZ Setember '29, but I have no idea when the kit would have been made in Canada.

Now, for a hijack:
It has a 7 tooth early box..... but...
