I have a Russian GAZ B block in my Cabriolet and there is no engine number...the area where the number goes is blank. I'm told this was standard for Russian B engines. Mine did come Ford Obsolete in...

Re: 31 Cabriolet backfires when started cold
Today I was able to borrow a "known good" caburetor and sure enough....the backfire was gone and I had MUCH more power! I was so sure my regular carb was clean so this really puzzled me. So, I opened...

Re: 31 Cabriolet backfires when started cold
Thanks all. I've been to my local group meeting and most suggest the same as online and much of this I have tried. I will test the spark color and distance tomorrow and post the results. This issue...

Re: 31 Cabriolet backfires when started cold
I have everything back together. Even after a carb rebuild including having the channels professionally blasted clean the car seems to run lean. If I have the GAV open between 1/8 to 1/4 the car...

Re: Russian Motor in a 31 Cabriolet
Thanks for all the great suggestions. Still has the same backfire. But, two clues are leading me back to the carburetor. If I run it with the choke partially closed the backfire is almost gone....

Re: Water & bubbles through head stud nut threads
Happy to report it stopped leaking! I pulled and sealed the stud with the distributor clamp (the easy one to get out) and the other two stud leaks went away over time. Re-torqued the stud nuts again,...

Re: Water & bubbles through head stud nut threads
I coated both sides of the head gasket three times each with the copper spray. I did torque the head bolts to 20/40/55 pounds per the Les Andrews manual and I have re-torqued them once after running...

Re: Water & bubbles through head stud nut threads
Torked the nuts in sequence twice, last time after running the car and letting it cool. So if I see bubbles isn't that a sign of compression escaping? I just had my radiator re-cored so I'd rather...

Water & bubbles through head stud nut threads
I now see water and air slowing escaping up through the head nut that holds the distributor cable (#8). I'm guessing it's a cracked head, anybody have any other suggestions? This is a GAZ Russian B...

Re: Russian Motor in a 31 Cabriolet

Re: Russian Motor in a 31 Cabriolet
When starting the spark lever is all the way up. Once started, I bring the lever down about half way while it's warming up. The idle level is about one quarter of the way down.

Re: Russian Motor in a 31 Cabriolet
Update: I can see tiny bubbles coming from this seem while the engine is running. Have to believe it's time for a head gasket? What else could cause this?

Re: Russian Motor in a 31 Cabriolet
Okay, after searching for comparison photos it looks like I have a timing cover to an "A" engine on a Russian "b" motor. Would 19 degrees difference cause backfiring? Until I can swap a model B cover...
