Anybody experienced cast iron degradation?

I'm looking at the bores on the crusty flatty. It's a 39/40 99 model.

Certain parts of the bores on 3 of the cylinders have (I can't think of a better expression) "degraded". The surface has a...

Re: Front Flexible Brake lines 20" Long ????

There's a stock Ford brake pipe, for the trucks that is longer than the standard 40 type, that's what most people (myself included) use for hydraulics on a 32.

Have a look.

Mart.

Re: For those with machining experience. Sleeve fitting??

Thanks for the pointers fellas. I'm part way through getting the studs out. I'm not going to rush into anything. I do have a block that is definitely scrap due to extensive cracking. It is tied up...

Re: Cool Clayborne Engine Stand

Are the pieces that bolt on centred on the camshaft centreline, or a little bit higher or lower? They shouldn't be too hard to fabricate.

I was thinking that wheel rims of a suitable size could be...

For those with machining experience. Sleeve fitting??

Just how hard is it to fit a sleeve? What is the procedure? The crusty flatty I have just acquired probably needs a sleeve. I have a boring bar but have never used it. I was thinking of trying to...

Re: Mart's Crusty Flatty. Teardown begins: Valve removal!

Yeah, Ralph, that's what I was thinking of, There's also a super duper one that clamps on the tab to wrench it out. If I was doing this all day every day I'd try and make something. I do have another...

Mart's Crusty Flatty. Teardown begins: Valve removal!

Well the intro video and discussion on the thread generated lots of interest. Lets see if the momentum continues in part 2 of the series.

In this scintillating episode I remove the remaining...

Re: Flathead Friday. New project. Rusty Crusty Flatty. VIDEO.

I can report the teardown is going well so far.
Valves. Out.
Crank. Out.
Rods and pistons. Out.
Lifters. Out
Cam. Out.

I was just saying to my son, the secret is applying just enough brute...

Re: Flathead Friday. New project. Rusty Crusty Flatty. VIDEO.

Thanks Murre for the helpful suggestions. I've never tried that method. I will be getting the pistons out soon, I'm not really looking forward to it.

On an old English 21 stud I was able to knock...

Re: Flathead Friday. New project. Rusty Crusty Flatty. VIDEO.

Glen, you're absolutely right. i have just been working on it for the last couple of hours and even then I did not notice it. I had to go back outside and have another look. It's there, alright, a 99...

Re: Flathead Friday. New project. Rusty Crusty Flatty. VIDEO.

Thanks Glen. We should have pretended yours is the "after" shot. that's a pretty useful spreadsheet, having all the pertinent facts all in one place.

Mine does fit the same description of yours,...

Re: 1934 and a 1937 Ford Transmission

It shouldn't have, the improved synchro didn't become available until 1939 (or was it late 38?) but anyway, it was later than 1937.

Who knows what may have been swapped in, though. Do the check as...

Re: Flathead Friday. New project. Rusty Crusty Flatty. VIDEO.

Thanks guys. The lift bracket wasn't my idea, I saw it mentioned somewhere. (Probably here).

The motor does have the extra port, but I can't see any plugs in the passages.

Mart.

Flathead Friday. New project. Rusty Crusty Flatty. VIDEO.

I bought a flathead that is in rather poor condition. I thought it might make an interesting little project and would be a good subject for a series of videos. Will it run? No chance. It might one...

Re: 35 axle housing

The predominant side for wear is the underside of the housing. So if you have a little wear on one side, you can swap the housings to put the worn part on the top side. You don't normally get wear as...

Re: Help: Reverse eye leaf spring problem 34 Ford

Can I just make a simple point. Not calling anyone out.

You CAN reverse a 32-34 rear spring main leaf by simply re-arching.

You flip the leaf end for end and turn it upside down, then re-arch...

Mine is possibly a...

Re: 32 axle bent twist ?

As tight as you can, bearing in mind you want to end up with a split pin hole lining up. 100lbs ft plus. (I don't use a figure, just v. tight with a 30" bar.)

Re: Frame Webbing Installation

Thanks from me, too, on the rear mount detail. I had to fix some stress cracks on my 32 sedan body in that area so once it comes off the backburner it will get a spring included.

Mart.
