Re: gear oil

I'm sure someone will correct me here. But I think you just fill it until oil begins to dribble out of the oil fill plug on the side of the transmission case.

Re: non detergent oil

I put modern oil in my merc about 6 months ago. Didn't know what was in there from the last owner, except to say it was black as tar and thicker than treacle so could've been many years old. Maybe...

Re: Upholstery people

Betta post a few pics of your 32 when you get round to it! Sounds like it's gonna turn out really nice.

Re: 48 coupe- V8-can bad fuel pump leak gas into the engine?

Alex,

Glad to hear you achieved such a good result by doing the overhaul job on your carb. That is exactly what I was intending to do when I ended up with water in the oil, and had to attend to...

Re: 12 volt electric fuel pump wont stop ticking plus fuel guage starts from full.

Jim,
Does the fuel guage function normally outside of the issue you mention?

Re: 12 volt electric fuel pump wont stop ticking plus fuel guage starts from full.

Hi Jim,

On the subject of your " malfunctioning" fuel guage...
Not sure how the old Ford fuel guage and sender work together, but I can tell you that I have a temperature guage in my '47 merc car...

Re: coolant in crankcase

My '47 Merc with older, possibly 39/40 merc motor ended up with water in the oil just after Xmas. Changed the head gaskets, and have seen no more probs.

Re: yet another car show on tv.

Can't believe no-one's mentioned Top Gear. Originally a BBC UK franchise that first aired about 10 years ago, and has run every season since. Got 3 "funny guys" out front. Jeremy Clarkson, James...

Re: 48 coupe- V8-can bad fuel pump leak gas into the engine?

PS: Alan,
1 dollar NZ equals (roughly) 0.85 dollar US. At today's market... Or was that yesterday? Not sure on the British pound (currency not weight). I think that was about 1 NZD to about...

Re: 48 coupe- V8-can bad fuel pump leak gas into the engine?

I guess what it boils down to is whether or not a US pint equals 0.6 of a litre or not. I know it's very close to that. At least this is what we were always taught in school. Then of course you...

Re: 48 coupe- V8-can bad fuel pump leak gas into the engine?

Alan,

I based my maths on the fact that in this part of the world, we consider 1 pint to be roughly equal to 0.6 of a litre. Therefore my 4 litres of gas is "roughly" equal to 6.66 times Alex's...

Re: 1946 merc hood hinges

As laryh said. I have a new set of springs (unsure of maker) fitted to my '47 merc and they will not hold the hood open either, though they do take 90% of the weight out of it, making it easy to...

Re: 48 coupe- V8-can bad fuel pump leak gas into the engine?

Alex, I would have to agree with the previous reply from Mike with regards to the pint of gas used in ten minutes. Without a whole lot of experience on the matter, I would say this... My merc idles...

Re: Myth and reality about bad head gaskets

Very interesting to read the many varied opinions on head gaskets and coolant leakage into oil. Some seem to outright dismiss the idea, while others stand and give evidence to the contrary. Guess...

Re: Car "spits" water droplets from tailpipes.

I sure may not remember the complete guts of it, but I remember enough of my High-school Chemistry and Physics to know that we were taught that burning a hydro-carbon fuel such as petrol (note the...

Re: Car "spits" water droplets from tailpipes.

Jake197000 mentioned that "most" mufflers have a small factory drain hole drilled in the rear of the thing just above the seam. My near-new system seems to have no drain holes at all. I guess that...

Thanks again Harley. Like you, I have contemplated EVERY possibility. Most of them not good. Your tip on the green water seems so obvious now you've mentioned it that I cant for the life of me...

Re: Car "spits" water droplets from tailpipes.

Good advice Mike B! As harleynut suggested earlier, that water could be coming from just about anywhere (even from the heavens above). But I don't believe the good Lord has gotten round to adding...

Rotorwrench. I'm no expert on much at all (ask my wife). But I've always been told that ANY motor will produce water vapour from the exhaust, as a result of water vapour that is naturally present...

Re: Car "spits" water droplets from tailpipes.

Great reply harleynut. Don't know why I didn't think of that! Shoulda payed more attention in school I guess. I'm running straight water in the cooling system at present. I was going to flush the...

Car "spits" water droplets from tailpipes.

Hi all,

I guess everyone has noticed at some time or other, how often, (usually when idling), cars will "spit" water droplets from the exhaust tailpipes? I have seen this from quite a number of...
