Re: Railroad Inspection Car

"speeder"? When I was growing up on a farm about 15 miles west of Fairmont we called them "putt-putt" cars. Never heard the term "speeder" until years later.

Re: To X-hatch ot not to X-hatch?

Way to do it, Kurt. Thus you are a 'repair technician', not just a 'parts changer'!

Re: 53 with automatic

Maybe the seller thinks it's a Model T! It was normal for these cars to run at 70 or more back when they were just used cars. Take it for a test drive and run up to 70 for a couple minutes to see...

Re: What would identify a Brookville 1931 Roadster Body

Since the Brookville bodies are that close to original, what difference does it make which one you have? Most people own an A for its appearance and the driving experience. If it looks and performs...

Re: babbit tolerance? .000?

I've read that this extra clearance is a 'crutch' to keep from seizing the rear main in an inserted engine. Anything to that?

Re: babbit tolerance? .000?

Thanks, Terry. Do you have available the official Ford factory method of obtaining correct bearing sizing and clearances? What did they really do?

Re: Marvel's Mystery Oil

Hmm, Marvel Mystery Oil has been around since at least the early '20's but ATF only since about 1950. How was MMO made before ATF came out?

Re: 79 Granada oil pump

If nothing else, go to a parts store and ask for a pump to block gasket, and a pump to pick up tube gasket and see if they catalogue it.

To me, that looks like an input shaft.

Re: Historical use of Model A to run farm equipment

My uncle did this with his Model A in the early '50's. He welded a power take off adapter to a rear wheel then simply jacked up that wheel and chocked the other one with a couple pieces of firewood....

Re: Henry Fords Pay Scale

This is an interesting discussion! But I've noticed a number of "armchair experts" that seem to know more about the inner workings of Henry Ford's mind than Henry himself knew! Or were some blank...

Re: later intake on 59ab

I'm curious. What kind of horror stories? I remember back around 1963-65 when PCV systems were mandated. They were about the single most effective step in reducing smog.

Re: Valve adjusting

"tranny in reverse"? That helper must have been a real gorilla! Plus, turning the engine that fast must have made it a real bear to stop at exactly the right position. Much, much easier to put the...

Re: Valve adjusting

Trouble with those Chevies was that the valve stems wore into the rocker arm faces and would chew up a feeler gauge if you tried to adjust while running! You couldn't get an accurate adjustment with...

Re: later intake on 59ab

This would be a great time to install a PCV system! The "road draft" setups only work (somewhat at that) at road speeds. Putting around at low speeds will not pull any fresh air through the...

Re: New B head first sample.

I wonder too. At first glance, it would seem that a lot of extra spark advance would be needed, and that is not always a good thing.

Re: "40 gear selection

I would wonder about transmission strength behind that engine! The 15/29 gears would be weaker (due to greater torque multiplication) but I wonder if either one would hold up to "spirited" driving? ...

Re: tell a Model A related story

How did you prep the hopper to hold fuel, and how much did it hold? Seems like a rather big risk for fuel contamination!

Re: My model A wont go faster than 40-45

Your timing is set by that there lever on the left side of the steering column. Push it too far up, and engine temperature rises while power drops. Pull it too far down, and power drops while the...

Re: tell a Model A related story

Gary, did any of your planes have air conditioning? Those long ferry flights must have been like an oven in the cockpit!

Re: tell a Model A related story

That reminds me of what my Dad used to tell about when the Model A came out (he was a teenager then). This may have been part of a popular song, even. Anyway, it's "Henry's made a lady out of...

Re: tell a Model A related story

OK, here's a question: Suppose you are taking a trip with your A starting tomorrow. After the customary "preflight", you head down the road to parts unknown. How far could you go before it quits or...
