Depends on if you are taking them out engine and full trans, or engine and bellhousing area, or just the engine.

The 28's were red. And they had a slight dish to them also.
Mine bleeds a little red on my hands if it is raining, and my hands get wet. I have seen a lot of them with a coating of heavy black...

I have heard over the years that an idle that is too high can cause this. I have no idea if this is true. Always sounded odd to me, but I don't know everything. It sure would not cost you...
