I too am attempting a Laycock overdrive conversion for our A ,,so far I’ve made a fixture to hold torquetube for measuring and mocking up as I progress,,,no hurry ,,,,it’s not an accurate alignment...

Pinion 9 tooth

Having read the various threads regarding ratios 3.78 and 4.1 ,,I am lead to believe that although the pinion tooth count for both ratios is 9 teeth there is a variation in tooth angle specifically...

With a bit of looking around I found myself an M46 trans and laycock overdrive,,,not that it helps but it’s an aluminium main case ,,it’s out of a 740 Volvo,,,

You’ve got it made for transmission supply ,,,living next to the land of Volvo ,,,I think I’ll have trouble sourcing one in Australia,,but I’ll start looking,,pretty sure I’ll manage the conversion...

I am interested in doing a laycock overdrive conversion in our A coupe ,,,as I haven’t found a suitable trans o/drive unit ,,as I will try to tackle the job with a machinist help and I think sourcing...

I have a question regarding setting pinion and side bearings preload,,do we do it dry and clean ,,meaning no lube ,,as lube changes the drag feel ,,thanks ,,

I'm glad I have seen that pic ,,,it has prompted me to realise that my radius ball clamp springs were in the wrong place ,I recently dissembled the ball clamps and did wonder what action the springs...

dont do what a local did with his 30 tank that had sandy residue and tried to vacuum clean it with his mums vacuum cleaner ,,,fumes into the cleaner and boom ,,,,mum not happy,,,

Hi Synchro ,,,for us Aussies can you give us some detail on the extent of your local rebuild on your A engine ,,bearings type ? balanced crank?,,how smooth does it run ,,,how heavy was your camper...

Just a side question regarding this bearing ,,has anyone replaced this bearing with a series of say 3 ball type sealed bearings to replicate the same dimension of the original ,,i presume machining...
