Hi Bart,
New batterys usually come with plastic protective caps on the terminals, be sure they have been removed, don't feel bad if there still there, seen it happen many times, we wont tell.

If your pressure plate fingers are 1/2” lower than 5/8” I would think that the disc is in backwards, that would cause the springs to be up against the flywheel.
