Re: Rear brake rebuild ...

Hi Andy
I drilled a hole in the end of the brake shaft and also a small cross hole on the sides so I could add my own geeese fitting.

Rear carrier warped

I believe the rear emergency brake carrier is warped on my 1931. Is it possible to fix this or is it a replace only? I have earlier bands without the tabs available, are these ok to use or do I need...

Re: Rear brake arm binding

Hi Mel

Have you run into the dust ring binding due to wear of the backplate “channel”? I think that’s my issue now where the ring can bind in there. I have it riveted in place and not sure if I...

I guess that's my case, it's warn like you said. I'm thinking of removing the dust ring and putting in a rubber o ring instead

Re: Rear brake arm binding

It seems it's the dust ring that binds up. The lever is loose now but as I spin the arm the dust ring binds every so often when i spin it. I'm tempted to leave it but if the ring gets in the right...

Rear brake arm binding

I purchased new camshafts for the rears and reusing the existing service brake arms. After assembling with the rivets I discovered I forgot the dust ring.

So I dissembled and purchased the dust...

torque tube to banjo bolts

Do any of the vendors make the correct bolts for the torque tube to banjo? I broke one today and need a replacement. Otherwise, any ford barners have an extra they could ship me?

Re: Hinge pins

Sometimes the pins/hinges get a bit bent, try opening the door part way and then removing them. On my passenger side, this did the trick and made them very easy to remove.

Is this bearing reusable

Attached is a picture of the bearing that runs in the front of the torque tube. I read that the repro’s are not that good and to use the original if possible. There is a bit of putting on the one...

Re: Brakes Not Stopping The Car

I wonder if you do didn't have the new breaks trued to the hub when first installed. If not, you could have worn the high spots and now have less breaking against the drums. Might be as simple as...

Re: Diff assembly coming soon

Hi Tom. When I took the pinion off I used one of the vendor wrenches for near the banjo and a large adjustable wrench on the outer one. That seemed to work to remove it at least

Re: Front brake repair on 31

I had a little play on my king pins, but after putting in new bushings and reaming them they feel pretty good.

Re: Diff assembly coming soon

Hi fred. That's what I tried but I ended up with vastly different shim thickness compared to when I used the new bearings. At least that was my experience.

On a positive note, I put the pionion...

Re: Diff assembly coming soon

Just adding a follow up to complete this thread. I would caution anyone trying to use trial or setup bearings to get a guess on how many shims would be needed under the carrier bearings. I spent...

Re: 31 coupe will not go over 40 mph

I believe the backfiring is when you turn off the engine. I think the timing may be off a bit. Backfire means you have unburied fuels hen you shut down. You could be running s bit rich and need to...

Re: differential assembly

I just went through this. Used the old bearing over the new ones, piece of wood on top and a few blows of a heavy hammer. It will seat, just take your time.

Re: Front brake repair on 31

Yes, you have to turn the king pin slightly to remove the brake actuator. Otherwise you can't remove it.

Re: Measuring carrier bearing preload

Success. I had made setup bearings to try to determine how many shins I would need. Didn't end up being a good solution as the number of shims I needed with new bearings vs the setup bearings was...

Re: How to remove blasted carrier bearings without ruining them

The one from HF is about 1 inch high. From a rough measurement I need a knife edge version which is no more than 3/4 -inch. Any ideas?

Re: How to remove blasted carrier bearings without ruining them

HI Tom

Yes, I read the article but for the life of me I could not get the bearing puller under the bearing as you showed. The one from HF is thicker and it simple would not fit with the knife...

How to remove blasted carrier bearings without ruining them

I have been working on the rear diff and I knew I had to add shims under the carrier bearings due to them having spun. The machine shop had them knurled and estimated how much they took off. So I...

Re: Measuring carrier bearing preload

I'm using a beam style inch lbs torque wrench. For lubes I used some diff oil, I assume that's good enough.

Measuring carrier bearing preload

I've been trying to measure the carrier preload using a variety of gaskets. It's not that easy determining the reading but with 3x10 gaskets I get around 10-12 in lbs. When i use 2x10 + 1x6 it...

Re: Snyders On-Line Ordering

Agree, it's same with pc. If you add an item to the cart, it takes you to the cart page and then you have to go back to browse more parts. Sorry to say but Brattons web site does this better. ...
