Re: 28 and 30 rear end differences

Jim,

The judging stds would indicate a lot of differences that would take a trained eye to know, and I'll defer to the early '28 experts to provide details. I know that radius rods, backing...

Re: lifting off the body (Brent Terry)

I prefer the path of least resistance... remove the two bolts on the steering box and lay it down. Then four guys can easily lift the body onto the frame at a reasonable height without fancy lifting...

Re: Slamming into first gear

As a kid, I was told to put a half pint of STP in the transmission, and I've always done it. I think there are folks who use a LOT of STP.

So I always use what Bratton's sells as 600W...

Re: Fender Identification

I’m guessing they are ‘31 “wide bed” fenders. They are quite rare. Typical ‘30-31 coupe, roadster, narrow bed fenders are 12” wide.

My best guess...

Agreed on Concours… a lot of stuff, and I've always had excellent service.

Re: My junkyard find

Will,

Being interested in Model A's, I'd hate to see some potentially good Model A housings be cut up. If the bearing surfaces aren't bad, they might be just what some Model A guy needs. And...

Re: 53 Ranchwagon gas tank

Tommyleea,

I have a '53 Ranchwagon and I removed the tank to clean it out and attempt to fix a bit of "flattening" that had occurred when someone evidently ran over something. I did not notice...

Re: Can anyone recommend a good 6V timing light?

I have powered my 12V timing light with my 6V/12V battery charger... just select 12V and power it up.

'46 Merc Cylinder heads- quick question

Sorry, but I can't find the right answer... what are the correct markings on a '46 Mercury cylinder head... 59 A-B, A only, etc.? Been searching and I've seen a couple variants.

Thanks

Re: white steam from breather and water tailpipe

Just had to replace both head gaskets on my '51 8BA. Had a smaller problem than what it sounds like you're seeing. My first sign was foaming coolant, and it would always push a bit of foam out after...

Re: Foaming coolant

Stopping the water pump from turning reduces the chance of what Bob pointed out... air leaking in as the source of the foaming.

What you should see is nice big bubbles coming to the surface,...

Re: Foaming coolant

Simple test... fill the radiator to the top. Disconnect the fan belt so the water pump won't turn. Start the engine and look for bubbles at the filler neck. Any bubbles are an indication of a blown...

Re: 53 Ranchwagon Radiator

On my '53 Ranchwagon (also recored), the brackets look to be about 7/8" in front of the core. The back side of the core is about 1" from the fan. I took several cell photos and I'm happy to share,...

Re: Help Me -before I go mad

I'm with Frank Miller... had a similar intermittent spark problem. It was a loose connection at the resister/fuse block.

Good luck!

Re: 49 ford 4 door radiator

I had problems with Carpenter hoses at the bottom as well. They are the wrong shape and as you said a bit too short. And the Ford logo came off in my hands as I tried to wrestle them on. Poor Chinese...

Re: Air Cleaner ID 46 to 48??

I’m with Michael on the one on the right. I have one just like it from a ‘53 I had a while ago.

Re: How Does The Starter Drive Work?

I’m not smart enough to provide the link, but go to Wikipedia and search on “bendix drive” it explains the operation pretty clearly.

Re: Question on speed and safety....

Leave Nancy and Chuck out of the discussion, please. Very inappropriate to
bring politics into this. A cheap and unnecessary shot

Re: Please educate me on scammers when selling a car

Update... all four contacts so far have evidently been scammers. Last two wanted me to run a title report. So, for $23 I ran a report (totally clean) and sent a copy with the VIN obliterated. So they...

Re: Please educate me on scammers when selling a car

Fair point. But we’re talking about a 2013 Subaru. Lots of them to drive and pick from locally. I would assume that if a reasonable person wanted a car, they’d call for a better description and find...

Re: Tudor seat pivot pin

I had to lengthen my drilled ones by welding, then cutting off and using a lathe to turn the groove for a snap ring and beveled the end a bit. Then I simply wrapped a nail around them to get the ID...

Re: I'm at wits END Help

I frankly always take a different approach. I would have the spring disassembled, and then just install the main leaf with shackles. Then stack up the other leaves and use a long threaded rod to pull...
