Try retarding your spark. If the ticking goes away it's spark knock.

I stripped the teeth off of my timing gear while on a tour in northeast Ct. He offered to drive down from Worcester with the gear for me. Stand up guy.

Longer head bolts are not needed, generally speaking. If the head is aluminum, put washers under the head bolts.
