Radiator Rodding Out

I have an original radiator that is in great shape but needs to have the tubes rodded out. The radiator shops I checked with either no longer do this kind of work or simply aren't interested in it....

Re: Roads in the old days Australia

I am curious about that Australian road malady called "bull dust". How did early drivers and vehicles deal with it?

Re: which bearing

You will need Ford part # 68-1225 or equivalent bearing, used in rear hubs from late 1936 through 1948.

Re: Piston question

John, the "tongue" you mentioned is also described as a tongue depressor shaped thickened area on the inside wall of the piston. This should face the valve chamber or passenger side of the engine...

Re: Holes in frame rail

If you go with bolts, use Grade 5 fine thread hex head bolts and tall nuts underneath. There were three rivets at that point so place three bolts. Tap the holes for a threaded fit and smooth down...

Re: Rattling after installation of new water pump

Mine developed an intermittent vibration and soft clattering sound that was most noticeable while the engine was idling. I thought the fan seemed to be tight on the shaft but old guy showed me...

Re: Anyone recognize this air cleaner? solved 1935 Dodge

My brother, who has been an early V8 guy since he could walk, inherited a 1935 Dodge coupe. Halfway through the restoration he came to realize how many of its parts were identical to those of Ford...

Re: Fading Interest

When I was your age I nearly bought a Model A Tudor. I had a part time job and was able to come up with the $600 asking price. The car was original but needed brakes, a complete rebuild of the...

Re: hoky fixs

When I bought my coupe it had a nice tight body with little bondo, and not a squeak, even on a rough road. However, the PO was a welder that worked for the Highway Dept. and he used his skills to...

Re: Phaeton folded down top rests on the spare wheel?

"taught" is also spelled "taut", but with a different meaning. Homonyms can be confusing.

Rust Stains on Stainless Steel

My 1931 headlight and tail light buckets have heavy rust stains where the non-stainless steel fasteners were located. I tried some mild rubbing compound which has had little effect on the stains.

Re: Oil Leak Fixed!

Curious about the situation of the hole drilled into the drain channel at the bottom of the rear cap. Some guys claim this helps reduce leaks but I've yet to see anything definitive about this...

Re: Steering box mounting nut

It goes in from inside the frame rail. Given the tight clearance, it would be difficult to do it from the outside, spin on the nut, and place the split pin.

Re: transmission, universal joint ? oiling discussion

JD Cornhead grease is a synthetic polyurea type lubricant. The charts show it to be incompatible with the typical petroleum derived grease products so it may not be compatible with the 600W that...

Re: transmission, universal joint ? oiling discussion

I have to wonder if regular CV Joint lubricant could work well in the U-joint. Is usually an "O" or "OO" rated lubricant and appears to behave much like the cornhead grease.

Re: GL4 & GL5 Gear Oils - Caution

The early Model A transmissions had bronze thrust washers at each end of the cluster gear and a lot of them are still out there and running with whatever oil folks choose to use.

Let's return to the OP's original question: "My question is - can a model A "jump" timing if the camshaft thrust plunger is not doing it's job because of a weak spring or some other reason?"

Re: new shaft in old style reverse idler ???

I say go ahead and use the old gear with a new shaft. Even though it runs all the time it does so at a low rate and oil does seep into bearing when it is not turning. I have found this assembly in...

Gramps used it to clean his false teeth. He called it "tooth powder". Only later did I learn its real and intended use.
