Re: holding a car until spring

Not to be morbid, but stuff happens. Seller could be the best guy in the world, but if he drops dead in the meantime will his family honor the deal?

Seal the deal, get it in writing.

Re: 1951 Merc elec fuel pump

Beware that the pump in its current location is likely to be overworked and burn out quickly.

Re: Best coil to use with a petronix ign

I'm running 6V Pertronix 1 on positive ground. I also have several 6V NOS coils, both OEM and aftermarket. For several years I chased a high RPM misfire and experimented with the carbs and swapping...

Re: 1950 Car Permanently Lubricated/Sealed Bearings

I've done them many times without a press, but I'll admit it's not the best method. Slice with a cutoff wheel and chisel retainers and bearings off and drive the new ones on with a hammer and brass...

Re: T-5 trans interchange

Flathead Fever:
The world class T5s use carbon fiber synchros that need ATF. The gear oil ruined the synchros and replacing it with ATF couldn't bring them back to life.

Re: T-5 trans interchange

There's a lot of reading available on this subject. Bottom line is you can use either one, but you'll need to learn about adapter plates, input shaft differences, and clutch throwout mechanisms.

Re: 8 volt batteries

I don't understand why anyone would try an 8 volt battery to solve 6 volt problems. If you're that unhappy it's easier to just go to 12 volts and be done with it.

Re: Distributor to 1951 255 8BA

In the long run it will likely happen, given the harsh environment of a daily driven car. I agree for most of our limited good-weather driving it would probably not be a problem.

Re: Distributor to 1951 255 8BA

You can cut off the shaft extension and use it in a short-shaft housing.

Technically the shaft should be the same metal as the housing otherwise you risk dissimilar metal corrosion.

Re: positive to negative change

OK, so just thinking out of the box here--- this car was recently purchased----is it possible that there is a second source (second battery) in this car (trunk)?

As crazy as it sounds, we've all...

Re: positive to negative change

Quite a mystery here.
I'd say it is electrochemically impossible for a three cell lead/acid battery to produce 12 volts, it just can't happen.

Re: Emulsion Tube Removal

Does anybody know if tapping threads in the tube will change its flow characteristics?

I've removed tubes before, but only to replace them with new ones. Was wondering if the old ones with the...

Re: Converting 6V radio to 12V inexpensively without rruining the radio

I thought this was an "asking" post and pleased to find it is a "telling" post.

Well done.

Re: ‘50 Won’t Go Into Gear - Help

That's great news. Just for the record for any future readers, I forgot to mention an important part of my solution and that is to hold the clutch pedal down while bumping the starter. Like so:

1....

Re: ‘50 Won’t Go Into Gear - Help

Regarding disabling the ignition, I highly doubt that car is going to start after sitting a long time by bumping the starter in gear.

If you're worried about it taking off, hold the brake pedal...

Re: ‘50 Won’t Go Into Gear - Help

Clutch plate is probably stuck to the flywheel.
Will it go into gear with the engine off?
Instead of pushing the car around, put it in gear (any gear) with the parking brake on and then...

Re: Wiring for a 6 volt

I wouldn't use 16 gauge anywhere on a 6 volt car. The cost savings don't justify it.

As an example of voltage drop, I was having overdrive problems particularly at night that troubled me for a...

Re: Dwell RPM meter

I walked into an auto parts store and asked if they sold dwell meters. All three (young) countermen looked at me and then each other in silence.

Re: 8CM to 8BA

The blocks are identical, so everything that bolts on can be swapped over.

I'd put the Merc crankshaft and connecting rods in, together with a new set of pistons and rings, and have a nice 255...

Re: This is funny

3rd way: Reading the past instead of reliving it.

Unless, of course, you'd like to discuss radials versus bias plys. Everyone is always open to discussing those again.
