That's the way Patrick used to advise. He was dead set against grinding clearance for the dipstick, likely because too many guys went too deep and destroyed the manifold.

A friend with a '36 humpback plastered the inside of his trunk lid with dash plaques. After a few years he ran out of room, as of course a hump back has the smallest lid of all the early Fords!

Not absolutely required, but certainly not smart to remove one. It’s a bypass system, so not a major problem if the line was plugged off. I’d definitely reinstall the filter, but that’s me.
