Re: 8ba questions

Hey V8VCOOPMAN - good point on the angle of the PCV valve . . . every one that I've ever seen needs to be vertical as that is how the little "shaker valve gizmo" needs the orientation to be - in...

Re: 8ba questions

If you put an early manifold on it, then you should think about welding up the TOP of the vent tube that pulls air from the crankcase and delivers it to the bottom of the manilfold - and out the...

Re: Double-Action Fuel/Vacuum Pump

I second this approach - Charlie does excellent work on a variety of things: Carbs, fuel-pumps and super-gonzo 2nd gear secret-squirrel bushing work for me. LOL ;)

Re: 59 a Crankshaft front seal

Sounds like you're using the late 49-53 sleeve with it . . . is it one that is smooth (for the new seal). If so, then you'd need to trim the back of the 59x pulley to account for the sleeve length. ...

Re: Cornhead grease in steering

Big Syringe: Good for filling steering boxes and basting Turkeys . . . just don't use the same one. ;)

Re: Pressure test plate

I'd make it out of thicker material . . . unless material cost is your big issue. In the end, the coast of the material is small (in my mind) as compared to the time/work put into the end result. ...

Re: I rebuilt my transmission (With a lot of Help)

Great Job - glad you tackled it . . . is not that difficult if you have the right parts, the right tolerances, etc.. I have a precision 'surface grinder' that really helps me set the main-shaft...

Re: 59A C/shaft Pulley & 8BA C/shaft Double Pulleys Details.

I'm with Brian - don't see how any 32-48 pulleys are going to help you - they all put the belts (whether one or two) - right against the block.

Also, when you're talking about "length" in these...

Re: Help. 8ba in ‘46 Merc

There is another option - it is to change the front of the motor to use the earlier cam/crank gears, timing cover and front-mount distributor - and the cam with the t-slot in the nose. The reason...

Re: 32 transmission/clutch

Just adjust the clutch, sounds like it is not releasing the clutch enough (since it grabs right at the bottom). Pull the floorboards and thread the adjuster out a bit. Setting the free travel to be...

Re: Anyone deal with???

I would spend some time with the 'G-Man' - waste as much of his time as possible, get him to take pictures (or really have to find them online). Then when he sends you some, ask for close-ups at...

Re: Slightly bent flange on a '40 rear hub- Can this be straightened?

If the cones fit it correctly (right taper) and everything was in the lathe as it should be, then it should be true. If it was mine, I would have put it on a spindle with bearings and then checked...

Re: Cam & transmission question

Well . . . I can't help myself . . . I will always run a hot cam and 'Yes' it will reduce the torque/HP at low speed. But - I build HotRods, not stock engines . . . just the way I prefer them.

I...

Re: Speedway’s Valve Train Components

Here is a pretty good article with a bunch of dyno tests on modern/thin ring packages. As JWL noted, there isn't a huge HP increase in switching over, so if cost is your big issue, then stick with...

Re: 35 spindles and axle worn. Looking for a needle thrust bearing

I'll take a look today. I think the other thing we were trying to point out is that it is really not a wear gap - there is no metal to metal contact on this section of the axle. The gap is supposed...

Re: 1940 merc & ford

Hey V8 Coopman, did you get all the dimensions you're looking for? If you need more, let me know . . . and I'll figure out how to get a measurement on my 40 Merc.

Re: What in Tarnation?

I love this thread and this truck . . . am a big fan of diesel engines. Now I must confess, I have a modern Duramax in my Chevy Silverado and it is a beast of an engine. I tell all my gas pickup...

Re: Speedway’s Valve Train Components

Ring Gap: I tend to follow the piston/ring manufacturer's recommendations - based on the bore size, ring types and performance level of the engine - and whether or not it is naturally aspirated or...

Re: 35 spindles and axle worn. Looking for a needle thrust bearing

Truthfully, there is no issue to be fixed . . . and there is no LOAD on that portion of the axle to spindle mating (as there is on other designs). So, anything you put in that space is effectively...

Re: T5 overdrive transmission to closed driveshaft

There are a few threads on some specific conversions - do a search. BUT, none of them will use the stock/standard length torque-tube, driveshaft or center-crossmember transmission location/mount. ...

Re: Speedway’s Valve Train Components

Low Tension Rings: By the way, I'm not talking about "low tension" oil rings in my usage of Ross pistons and metric rings.

While these definitely have applications in racing and performance...
