Re: Flathead Camshaft ID?
Thanks Ron. So you've not heard of a Dunn "F"? I have it out of the engine now so I could do a better check of the lift. Never tried measuring duration. I'll have to do some reading on how to do...

Flathead Camshaft ID?
Looking for some help identifying the cam in my 40 Merc Flathead. The original ower said it was a "3/4 Race" cam bought in Detroit in the 70's. The snout is labled "Dunn" and "Detroit" and stamped...

Re: Progress with jets on holley 94
I am running twin 94's on the 40 Merc in my roadster. It has an Isky 77 cam and has plenty of vacuum to keep the power valves closed at anything but WOT. I am running two 6.5 PVs and .051 Jets and...

Re: 53 Merc Park brake cable routing?
Merc Cruzer,
That is exactly what I needed! Thanks for taking the time to shoot a picture and find the parts diagram. I think I can really make this work.

53 Merc Park brake cable routing?
I bought a 53 Merc park brake handle assembly at a swap meet because I think it looks cool and I want to try grafting it into my 29 Roadster. I have a 40 Merc column and shifter in the car and don't...

Re: 40 Merc block sleeved from the factory?
Thanks for all the advice and information. I'm just finishing my valve job and general block clean out and am going to put the engine back together as is so I can enjoy the rest of the summer...

Re: 40 Merc block sleeved from the factory?
Bruce,
That's what I'm thinking. I have a wood lathe but not a metal one. I could make a big, hardwood mandrel with a flat steel plate on top and hammer or pull the sleeve in as you described. ...

Is there much in the way of difference that I should look for when shopping for an old original?

Re: 32 Ford Grill Insert
About $400 :) Actually, I'll be curious to see what everyone says. I need one for my roadster but want to find an original that needs work. I've even thought of trying to make one. I really don't...

Re: 40 Merc block sleeved from the factory?
Bruce,
What does the KRW kit look like? Is it something I could make? I'm in Michigan so it's too far for me to come and borrow but I sure appreciate the offer. I've read about peeling the...

Re: Valve springs/specifications for a 40 Merc
I checked the lift on my cam and it is nearly stock lift. I can't check duration but my guess is that it is an Isky 77 or 88, not a Max 1 or 400 Jr which both have much higher lift. I checked the...

Re: 40 Merc block sleeved from the factory?
Richard,
I like your approach. I may just do that. On my last flathead, the bores were totally shot so I had it bored to fit a set of good used pistons that a guy gave me. The guy at the machine...

Re: 40 Merc block sleeved from the factory?
Thanks Ed! Kinda sounds like the thing to do is pull the sleeves and bore it oversize. That will work well with my car being a hotrod and all. For now, I will continue to run it as is. It's suprising...

40 Merc block sleeved from the factory?
Guys,
My 40 Merc block, stamped "99" on the front right corner of the intake mounting surface, had standard bore steel sleeves pressed in. Could it have come like that from the factory? They are...

Re: Wrong head gaskets on a 40 Merc?
Checked my heads last night and they were not drilled to the new, larger size. Worse than that, they were all limed up so that they were only about 1/4" in diameter. I cleaned them all out and will...

Thanks for the excellent information. It's interesting that some suppliers still sell both style head gaskets. I located the head drilling information on line but can not read the...

Wrong head gaskets on a 40 Merc?
When I tore down my 40 Merc motor for a valve job, I discovered that the PO had installed head gaskets with small round holes for the center water passages instead of the style with the "keystone"...
