Re: Valve Lash

First thing to do is check the compression, and maybe even a leak-down test. Also look at the old plugs for color, indicating a rich or lean condition.

Re: H&H Model A motor thrust bearing issue

Benson makes a good point! Some engine builders use only the lower half of the thrust bearing, because it is much easier than making a full-circle bearing. IMO this is not adequate, and they do...

Re: arbor shim size for pinion shaft

I agree with what Tom says too, but I have built a few quick-change rears and have had to move the pinion towards the ring gear to get proper back-lash. I have never heard the term arbor shim...

Re: backlash

You may need to shim under the right bearing race to move the ring gear to the, right. OR maybe move the pinion farther in towards the ring gear to accomplish the same thing. Moving the pinion in...

Re: Kwik Way Boring Bar Fixtures

I've found that mains hold up very well, better than rods.

Re: installed a new 6:1 head now a tapping noise

It's possible a piston is hitting the head or gasket.

Re: Original model A tattersfield intake? Pics?

It appears to be an original manifold but also appears to have originally made for a Winfield carb but the top couple of inches have been cut off and a Stromberg flange welded on, commonly done back...

Re: Kwik Way Boring Bar Fixtures

And any 1.250" will work. Another important item is the matching micrometer.

Re: Kwik Way Boring Bar Fixtures

There are 2 fixtures, one at each end, that locate the bar. First you mount the bar to the pan rails, using the appropriate steel rails. (I made my own out of square tubing, and the length I...

Re: Mystery engine

Durant rods could be installed in '28 and earlier Chevies, they were longer and thus provided more compression in the Chevy. A tiny bit of history that nobody today knows.

Re: Float a motor results

Russ, I don't think any of the diaphragm clutches have the early Ford pattern. The one I used was for a Mustang and it was slightly different and has 3 dowel pins. I've heard that Clutch Masters...

Must be custom-built or a prototype as I believe the first factory ute was in 1933?

Re: Float a motor results

As stated above, my clutch chatter was worse with the FAM's. The diaphragm pressure plate was the final cure. That clutch needs a rounded throw-out bearing but is very smooth.

Re: Float a motor results

My tudor had FOM's when I got it, clutch chatter was way too much. I changed engines, with new V8 clutch and flywheel, still much chatter. I replaced the FOM's with the stock mounts, this...

Re: Model A With Hydraulic Brakes

They will inter-change. Any V8 drum installed on a Model A will likely rub on the backing plate. Most people just use axle shims to remedy this. A little material can also be machined off the...

Re: F150 trans or 39 Ford trans for banger?

The '39 does not have overdrive, its advantage over the stock A is syncro on 2nd and 3rd and better gear ratio-split. Top speed will not be much different as you don't have enough power with a stock...

Re: Long term "A" Ownership

I bought my widebed in 1958, a high-dollar truck, paid $150 and that was quite a bit for any A back then. Accessories, just a 4-port Riley, B trans with Zephyr gears, Colombia diff, hydraulics and...

Re: emergency radiator repair

I used STP in the leaky shocks in my '54 Olds, sure stiffened the up, and stayed in longer than the "correct" fluid!
