Re: Isky 1007B Track Numbers

"Tom Hutchinson! He was one of my flathead mentors when I was growing up in SoCal."

Tom rebuilt the flathead in my Tonner in May 2006. During the build he took time to educate me about the...

Re: 1940 ford pickup tailgate chain install

More photos. I think the spring loaded catch acts as a safety device to insure the hook on the strap stays engaged with the eye on the tailgate. If you need more detail PM me and I'll take some...

Re: Towing a big truck

With the axles installed the gears and bearings in the differential are being lubricated whether driven or towed. The same should be true of the trans. The only advantage that I see for pulling the...

Re: 41 pu. Rear fender brace at top?

Mart

Attached are photos of the rear fender on a 40 Ford 1/2 ton pickup. No center brace on the fender. There is a brace to lower edge on the back of the rear fenders. I think its there for...

Re: 41pu fender to bed. Is welting used?

Mart
There was welting between the fenders and body on the 40 Tonner when I bought it. I think it came from the factory this way since the hardware holding the fenders on were virgin OEM bolts and...

Re: overdrive

You should have a 30 amp fuse somewhere in that circuit. On my 40 Tonner with a 49 Merc O/D I ran a 10 gauge wire from the hot side of the On/Off switch on the steering column to a 30 amp inline...

Re: any workshop manuals available for my '41 PU

I used the 1939-48 Ford and Mercury Shop Manual - Passenger Cars and Trucks which is a reprint of the Canadian repair manual from Cranken Hope Publishing - no longer in business. The title of this...

FWIW this BBB report doesn’t look good.

Re: 1940 1 ton express

“I think it’s worth the effort to keep them in service if they are not damaged, heavily rusted, etc.”.
I agree with Stu. I was able to cull thru two sets of the OEM 17” rims and make up one set of...

Re: 1940 1 ton express

Welcome to the Barn. I'm looking forward to seeing some photos of your rig.
Attached are some photos of changes I made to my 40 Tonner that may be what you're looking for. Regarding the tires. ...

Re: Finish for wheel cylinders

I had backing plates powder coated and the finish has so far resisted DOT 3. On a cautionary note the powder coating material flowed into a few of the bolt holes reducing them in size which had to...

Re: 49 f1 PU T5

I replaced the 4 speed in the Tonner with a 49 Merc 3 Speed O/D trans behind a 239 CI engine and a set of 4.11 gears driving 30” Michelin M/S tires on the Tonner and it cruises nicely at 60-65 MPH. ...

Re: shift tower won't go back on!

Does your shifter look like the one in the photos? Is the tip on yours worn? When you insert it in the shift tower is the tip centered in between the hardware on the shafts? Are you able to move...

Re: shift tower won't go back on!

Each of those 3 vertical bumps cast on the front of the shift tower hold a spring loaded ball bearing that drop into a notch in the sliding shafts when a shift is made. This setup holds the shaft...

Re: shift tower won't go back on!

Does your shift tower look like this one? If so when you put the tower on the trans the longer cast sleeves that hold the steel sliding shafts should be facing the front of the transmission...

Re: 11 inch clutch flywheel question

According to the specs from the 1940 Ford Reference Manual the flywheel in the 85HP and 95HP Ford, Mercury and Lincoln cars weighed 38.7 pounds. The flywheel in Ford trucks with an 11” clutch...

Re: 11 inch clutch flywheel question

The OEM pressure plate on my 1940 tonner was 11”. I opted to change to a 10” PP with the lighter springs and noticed a difference when double clutching the 4 speed trans especially in city traffic. ...

Re: Ford truck identification

I stand corrected. Your response made me go back and take another look at the overload brackets on the Tonner (photo attached). They are clamped to the frame and not riveted as I remembered.

Re: Ford truck identification

As with many variances in Ford production it was possible to order overload springs from the factory as an option on both the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. My 1940 Tonner is an example of this. It came...

Re: 1-1/2 Ton Transmission / Overdrive / Gearing Options

Thinking way outside the box Gear Vendors might have a unit that could be adapted to fit the 4 speed in your truck. https://www.gearvendors.com/f2wdt.html You would have to change to an open...

Re: Lots of great 34 Ford footage! Netflix Highwaymen

Re: K.R.Wilson box refinishing

I used WATCO Teak Oil on the bed of the truck. It shows the color and grain of the wood without the over restored look of varnish or polyurethane. It will darken as it ages leaving a nice "used"...
