Had a similar noise in an 8BA. Highway Cruising with no load or engine "floating" with a neutral throttle, the noise would come in and out.
Clyde of C&G suggested that the piston to head clearance...

Look into tumbling media, a process for deburring aluminum parts after machining. I seen excellent results on concours Corvette alloy engine parts.

I have not had occasion to try this myself. Tar based undercoating, when frozen with dry ice becomes brittle and can be shattered and easily removed. Has anyone tried this process?

My understanding:
The factory configuration is a wood sub floor under the metal floor. The metal floor is riveted in place to the side and front panels after the wood is installed on the sub frame....

1939-41 Merc engine
Disassembled and cleaned, no cracks in the deck, std 3 3/16 bore.
passes the "pencil test" meaning the look of a 221 cu inch but is 239 cu inches.

32 fuel gauge
Fuel gauge from a 32 Ford pickup. Does not appear to have ever been dissembled. Gasket between glass and face is dislodged. Face appears to be excellent. Do not know if it works. $95.
